Tanks are modelled with a physics engine and have gears, rev counters and speedos, and steer themselves with brake levers to give them realistic looking tracked vehicle movement. Each bullet, shell or piece of shrapnel is modelled in 3D and ricochets realistically off sloping surfaces. You can see each infantryman's rank, name, weapon, ammunition remaining, heart rate and fatigue levels. Machine gunners will call for ammunition when they're running low and other squad members will rush over with spare ammo if they are carrying any. Wounded men call for medics who will sprint over to administer first aid. Off-board artillery can be called in but will have to fire several ranging shots before the full 8 gun battery opens fire simultaneously. Play against either the sophisticated built-in AI, or a friend over the internet. The download includes the tutorial, and a $4.99 IAP unlocks the first (?) set of scenarios. I'll try to write impressions after playing through the tutorial later today. As long as there aren't any glaring interface issues, the scenario pack looks like a no-brainer for me. A first glance gives a 2D Combat Mission vibe. Bloodangel Well-Known Member Jan 19, 2011 1,824 46 48 Retail England #3 Bloodangel, Jun 9, 2014 No iPhone? Silvers Well-Known Member May 18, 2014 107 0 0 #4 Silvers, Jun 9, 2014 Just finished the tutorial on the iPad, and purchased the full game unlock ($4.99 in Canada). This game controls like a dream, so no worries there. As for what it is and isn't... This is a small-scale, scenario based tactical game clearly designed with mobile gaming in mind. All scenarios take place on the same small map of a village. This is not a problem, just as the static board is not a problem in chess. As in chess, your units are given and can be directed via simple orders. You can move, change facing, fire or hurry up, and that's about it, as far as I can tell. (Apart from limited artillery strikes, which can include smoke). The simulation is very thorough, and line of sight is critical. If you lose sight of an enemy, you'll see an icon at their last known position. So far, I've seen no reason to doubt the app description's AI and simulation claims. The elegant controls, single map and streamlined orders make it easy to learn, but those two facturs make it fulfilling and hard to master. I can see novices to war gaming picking it up easily, while grognards delight in its intricacies. Recommended. The only two big issues so far: massively bugged terrain graphics when scrolling about at full zoom, and the absence of a detailed manual (unit specs etc.) in a game begging for it. If the dev reads this, something really needs to be done about the broken terrain parallax when zoomed in, ASAP. . Also, grats on a fantastic release. No info on what is shooting at my units! 2. No pause I can find, hard to keep track when there are tons of things going on 3. No mention what the buttons do, "Help" is not informative. 4. Help screen overlays the tutorial 5. Light mortar unit does not move nor fire 6. Vehicle units seem to ignore fire command and do not prioritize target -- I can accept the former but the latter is very bad for health 7. Side fixed for each scenario, limits replayability. Good things: 1. Firefight, as the title says, is really intense 2. UI is pretty good, no problem in issuing command 3. Gameplay is very challenging, which is good for a wargame 4. I'm still having a lot of fun with it and consider it money well spent, but it could definitely benefit from some obvious updates. This is particularly true when it comes to providing feedback and information. Unit capabilities, terrain information and morale effects (if they exist!) are unnecessarily opaque and should be made easily available in numerical fashion. The broken zoom graphics and lack of a manual are critical errors and should be fixed as soon as possible. I understand this is apparently a one-man outfit, but things like the disappearing tutorial are sloppy and prevent this game from presenting in a way that signals high quality. I wasn't aware this was available on the PC, but I don't think I'd buy it for that platform. I like it precisely because it's a fun, low-stakes tactical experience that I can play for a few minutes at a time when it's not feasible to, say, pull out Panzer Corps and spend ten minutes reassessing the situation I was in last turn. Firefight has a lot of unrealized potential. If the dev commits to polishing it, then it could find new life on the App Store. gmattergames Well-Known Member Mar 1, 2013 607 42 28 #10 gmattergames, Jun 10, 2014 What does $5 unlock if there's only on map? Sorry about the graphics alignment problems when you're zoomed out. I didn't spot that as I only have an iPad 1 and this problem seems to be much worse on retina displays (what's happening is the background is being drawn on an exact pixel boundary, but the images are drawn at a floating point position on top, so the better retina display makes the difference look much worse). I've got that fixed and it's in the update which will go live in a few days time. Sorry about the mortar teams not being able to move bug too! They can shoot OK if you never try and move them, but as soon as you try and move them their brains get stuck and they will do nothing. That bug is fixed in the update too. I've also fixed the bug where the first time you play the game the Help screen automatically appears, but the tutorial also starts running (I just forgot to test the app again as a fresh install!) I didn't make it an iPhone game too as, although it would have been technically possible, I think it would be really hard to play as you'd see so little of the map at one time. You could zoom out but then you wouldn't be able to see your troops, and controlling them would be ever so fiddly. I'll be adding more options, including the ability to choose your own units at the beginning of the game. The reason I didn't add that for now is that I just hadn't had time to digitise that many tanks, so you wouldn't have had many to choose from. I'm working on new tanks and a new map right now. Another feature I'll be adding is a "more info" button for each man or vehicle so you can read up more on them, and see more details like how many APCBC, APCR or HE etc... shells a tank has rather than just the total remaining. I want to add a lot more feedback via the men shouting things but I just couldn't find any more decent sound effects other than "get down", "medic" and "ammo". I tried recording my own voice but it sounded terrible! If the game sells well I'll try and get some professional actors maybe. Thanks again for playing my game and please keep the suggestions/bug reports coming! SeanOConnor Member Jun 2, 2010 10 0 0 http://www.windowsgames.co.uk #19 SeanOConnor, Jun 23, 2014 It turns out that the strange background graphic alignment problem wasn't what I thought it was! It's a bug that only seems to affect the retina displays on iPad 3s and 4s, but not the newer iPad Airs, even though they have retina displays too. It also doesn't show up on the retina iPad simulator, so all I can guess is that 3s and 4s don't like drawing large images when a lot of the image is off the screen. I've submitted a fix and that should go live sometime around the 29th June. cassus Member May 11, 2014 9 0 0 #20 cassus, Jun 25, 2014 Very much enjoy this. Far better than combat mission touch. I feel like my units make pretty sound decisions here, only guidance is really needed on my part. Really cool. My dudes making decisions and slowly advancing is just super cool to watch. Another map or two and this is a 5 star game for me. Great work. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
