Best of luck to them, there's a big freemium market out there but I just try to avoid these kinds of games as much as possible. From the article: "With the aid of the open beta, Fishlabs now hopes to gain additional information about crucial points such as live server operation or player spending behaviour." Well, at least they are honest about tweaking this towards spending behavior. awp69 Well-Known Member Oct 30, 2009 8,249 0 36 Greenville, SC #3 awp69, Nov 21, 2013 Disappointed in the Freemium model, but will be interested to see what people in the soft launch countries think of it. Also might want to put soft launch in the thread title so people don't get too excited. biokid Well-Known Member Jul 11, 2013 931 0 0 Wop Wops #4 biokid, Nov 21, 2013 Do you know how to edit the thread title? since I am pretty sure you cannot do that, except you are a moderator (maybe). Thank you nightc1 Well-Known Member Oct 19, 2012 4,362 0 0 AL #7 nightc1, Nov 21, 2013 Yeah, that's the only way I know of without pm'ing a specific mod that participates on the forums regularly. Also it helps if multiple people report something to be changed. I went ahead and reported it as well. I said, not knowing if it should be hyphenated or not that "[Softlaunch]" should be added to the title and explained that it's softlaunching in many countries. EDIT: Biokid, you can report your own post too. I've had to do that to myself before when I messed up a thread title. Rip73 Well-Known Member Nov 18, 2011 4,399 0 0 #8 Rip73, Nov 21, 2013 Considering its been well publicised and very clear from the first bit of news about this game that it would be Free2Play, I'm not sure where the surprise at that fact is coming from. And beyond that, even those without access to the closed beta (which has demonstrated massively impressive retention numbers), it should be clear from the type of game it is and the model it's based around, that this might actually be one that is suited to the proper Free2Play model (assuming it is done in a balanced and acceptable way by the time it launches, which I'm pretty sure it will considering the huge amount of testing going on). I wish them the best of luck with it anyway as I see it as a solid addition to iOS with a huge amount of potential that will have many years in it if it goes the way they want it too. grenadedodger Well-Known Member Jul 6, 2010 653 0 0 Manchester, UK #9 grenadedodger, Nov 21, 2013 "soft launches" make me want to punch kittens. heringer Well-Known Member Oct 2, 2011 807 0 0 #10 heringer, Nov 21, 2013 Going freemium with a very niche genre o played mostly by very hard core gamers. It's hard enough finding time to play a fraction of what I own as it is. Heck, I kind of like not knowing week to week what is coming out that week let alone Q1 of next year. That was one of the harder parts of being a console and traditional handheld gamer. The wait for games & systems was painful. But that's me, I enjoyed the first two GoF games, saw a thread title that didn't indicate this was freemium let alone a softlaunch, and jumped in smiling. They are opting for the big freemium gamble and it'll either make them or finish breaking them. I still wish the dev good luck in the freemium market. No hard feelings. No hate or any such stuff, just a little disappointed since I thought the first two games were cool. Rip73 Well-Known Member Nov 18, 2011 4,399 0 0 #18 Rip73, Nov 21, 2013 Fair enough, I get that. If I didn't have to, I probably wouldn't have time either. Just a quick one on the freemium gamble point. It would actually be a much bigger gamble if they went premium in the current marketplace. I know people on here hate that but the stats do reflect that issue. They have a much better statistical chance of monetising in the Free2Play sector. And monetising is not a dirty word, its something we all have to do and maximise as much as possible, even non game developers. Some are done right. Some are done very wrong. I generally will always give them a chance. They are free and it will cost me nothing to have a look. If it's done right, its a keeper and they will monetise something from me. If it's done wrong, well, it cost nothing, I can delete it and move on with no concern and with no monetary punishment involved. And that moving on sends a much clearer signal than any article or thread post because retention numbers are hugely important to every developer these days. In relation to this one, I have a strong positive feeling about it. Mainly due to the excellent work they have done in the past but also due to the extensive amount of testing done already and being done. They will have enough data by the time it launches to optimise keeping people on board and for that, it will have to be balanced. They will of course still need to monetise but their odds are much, much slimmer if it were premium at any price point people think might be fair. It still wouldn't gain enough user base to make it viable. Again, I do tend to the optimistic side on these things but I do understand the necessity also. And realistically, there is a lot of stuff around the corner so if I come across one that I don't like, there is always something else to try out. Tobi@Fishlabs Well-Known Member Sep 26, 2012 149 0 0 #19 Tobi@Fishlabs, Nov 21, 2013 Cheers for the feedback & "good luck" wishes, everybody! We've put a helluva lot of work into that title over the past two years and it feels really good to finally have it out on the App Store in more than a dozen countries. Of course, equipping a rather complex hardcore 3D game with free-to-play mechanics is a bit of a risk, because most games embracing that model are more on the casual side. But we've always been very eager to bring kick-ass graphics and deep gameplay to mobile and we're determined to do so, regardless of the employed business model. Personally, I believe that Galaxy on Fire - Alliances is a really good example of a game that brings high-quality production values, demanding multiplayer gameplay and free-to-play monetization in line. No matter whether you're in doubt or whether you're eager to play it, I'd suggest you'd just give it a try... even if you're never going to spend a dollar, you'll see that you can still make good progress and enjoy the title to its fullest. We've always said that we wanted the game to be fully accessible and fairly balanced for paying and non-paying players alike and I think we did a pretty decent job at that... Anyway, we're really thankful for all the support and feedback we get at the moment and we hope that at least some you guys dig our new game! So keep your posts comin' as we'd love to read your impressions and thoughts on GOFA. MrMojoRisin Well-Known Member Jul 27, 2012 1,183 0 0 #20 MrMojoRisin, Nov 21, 2013 How come?
