Great shout. Was quite creepy back then. That game was also unique as you could choose to be a boy or a girl. Great game for its time and in 48k !

resident evil on ps1 or silent hill. not sure which i played first. pretty sure it was re1 tho. I wish games still possessed that kind of magic as when i was a kid.

I'd have to say Doom. Played it on the Sega 32X when I was like 12 or so. Great audio in that game.

    Also the first Resident Evil.
Playing alone, at night in the dark. Suddenly ... *BANG* *BOOM*.
Jumping up from my chair, heart racing, cold sweat, all that jazz.
Nah, no zombies, just my friends back from buying beer and knocking - very loud - on the door ;)
Over 15 years ago, still not forgotten, and still not surpassed. Guess they did something right with RE1. None of the later REs had such a shock effect on me.

Friday the 13th on NES was really creepy trying to avoid Jason until suddenly he'd show up in a cabin upon you...

Dude, I totally forgot that one! Definitely creepy!

Doom on PC made me jump outta my seat though. I freaking love Doom.

Another "classic" was in Resident Evil 2 where the dog jumped through the one sided window. That whole game is creeptastic.

Edit: it *is* RE 2 I'm thinking about, right?

Aliens vs. Predator (Mac, not iOS).

Especially playing as Marine with Aliens or Facehuggers around in the dark. It wasn't only about the jump scares... it was the tension and the fight for awareness (flares etc.) the whole time.

"Scared" is probably pushing it, but Doom 3 on the PC and Dead Space on the iPhone got a few good jumps out of me.

3D Ant Attack on the good old Speccy like others have said. Awesome game, I finished it and got the medal 3-4 times.

Acornsoft Maze. Being trapped in the maze was bad enough but the footsteps of the robots(?) coming for you was very scary.

Rescue on Fractalus - I defy anyone not to crap themselves the first time the alien appears.
