There is a game called Blue Skies with similar gameplay, and there are several titles by Dumb Games (developer) with similar concept. Hope that helps.

There really aren't a lot of decent shmup games in existence yet. I'm not sure, but it's probably due to control issues. There are few that show some promise.

Oddly enough, the best shmup game currently out there is probably Space Ninja, even though you can't actually shoot. But, they've got the feel of the controls better than most.

Try the free version of Dragonforce, it looks OK and hopefully the real version (when it comes out) will be even better. Space Deadbeef is reasonable too, and also free.

Blue Skies is my favourite. It's only $0.99 and there's the lite version too.

1941 was really more of a top-down shooter, while Blue Skies gives you free roam so IMO it's really different, but you can't go wrong with checking out the lite version..

And yes, 1941 was a kick-ass game back in the day...
I remember doing that upside down spin....

Blue Skies is nothing like 1941. 1941 was a vert shmup. Blue Skies is more along the lines of EA's "Strike" helicopter shooter series (Desert Strike, Urban Strike, etc.), more mission based stuff.

If you're looking for a vert shmup, there's Sentry Alpha, Sky Thunder, the Dragon Force demo, and rRootage. Of that bunch, rRootage is honestly the best one, and it's free. I'd give Sentry Alpha runner-up status.

They're both vert shmups. So, yeah, they are close, seeing as how they're both not only in the same genre, but of the same subtype. rRootage and 1941 may be different in how they feel, but they're far closer together than Blue Skies with either of them, and even something like Space Deadbeef.
