I'll wait to see how they implement the additional decks (included or IAP) as the iPhone and iPad versions of settlers + IAP has cost me $30 so I'm hesitant to jump into another USM game. Appletini Well-Known Member Jan 8, 2011 2,564 0 0 Ankh-Morpork #13 Appletini, Jun 19, 2013 Unfortunately, there are already a couple of pretty huge missteps here, three of the most egregious being: 1) No undo function. Not only can you not undo a turn, you often can't even back out of an action you haven't yet committed to if you change your mind. 2) Dialog boxes cover critical information. For example, if an event occurs that allows you to choose a bonus resource, that popup covers your entire settlement and doesn't allow you to look at the board or your hand. This means that you can't actually tell what resources you currently possess, what you might need, or what a card will cost to play so you can plan ahead and choose a relevant resource. 3) Probably the biggest issue at the moment: the non-resource cards (those without dice on them) from the physical game include the cost of the card, its reward, other requirements and flavour text, but in this app, not one piece of this information shows on the main play screen. The only way to see this information is to tap each card on the board or in your hand individually, then tap X to close the info box again, one at a time. It doesn't help that all of the "trade ship" cards look almost identical, so you basically do have to blow them up in info mode just to figure out which one(s) you have in your hand or settlement. Comparison of physical and digital note the symbols on the non-resource cards in the physical game (the resource cards replace the 1-3 symbols along the edges that represent the number of resources on the physical card with a simple clear number instead, which is one of the few sensible changes in this app). To put that in context: Picture the above screen from Ascension. Now imagine that all of those cards provide no information and show absolutely nothing whatsoever other than the illustration, and think about how inefficient, awkward and tiresome trying to play that would be. Appletini Well-Known Member Jan 8, 2011 2,564 0 0 Ankh-Morpork #14 Appletini, Jun 19, 2013 All of the modes/decks of the physical game are present here from the start; the app has no IAP. As listed in the game itself, the modes are: Basic Game (7 Victory Points) Duel of the Princes (13 VP) the "full game" that uses all of the theme decks. And the "theme games": Era of Gold (12 VP) Era of Turmoil (12 VP) Era of Progress (12 VP) VeganTnT Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2008 4,490 3 0 Freelance Entertainment Analyst Orlando, FL #15 VeganTnT, Jun 19, 2013 It doesn't include Age of Darkness or Age of Enlightenment though does it? That's what I want to see how them implement. When they added Seafarers to Catan they also added a Campaign with a giant padlock to the main menu and you could only get access if you purchased the IAP and their added maps made selection for a game infuriating. They've yet to fix all the problems in settlers, the dialog box covering critical information has been an issue in settlers for YEARS, so I'm really unsure of giving this dev my money. I appreciate that they are going universal and seem to be making a more cohesive package and I want to vote with my money and say "yes! More of this!" But I've been burned so bad in the past by their previous apps (Settlers, Keltis, Ingenious) that I dare say this app needs to be near perfect in order for me to buy it. Appletini Well-Known Member Jan 8, 2011 2,564 0 0 Ankh-Morpork #16 Appletini, Jun 19, 2013 I haven't seen them make any reference to bringing those across, so while they probably will eventually, as they did with the expansions for Catan, it doesn't look like that will be any time soon. That was acceptable though, because the campaign mode is a major feature, but one that only exists within those expansions. Appletini Well-Known Member Jan 8, 2011 2,564 0 0 Ankh-Morpork #17 Appletini, Jun 19, 2013 Ugh, yet another issue. It appears that if you return back to the main menu while in a position where the game expects you to complete an action (draw a card, place a card, etc.), trying to continue the game will consistently cause it to crash. pjft Well-Known Member Feb 15, 2011 1,082 8 38 #18 pjft, Jun 19, 2013 Hm, that's unfortunate. I was actually quite enthusiastic about this release, since I wanted to test drive it on my iPad before buying the physical game to play with my wife. drelbs Well-Known Member Jun 25, 2009 11,201 7 38 #19 drelbs, Jun 19, 2013 Sucks to hear the same dev did this one - Mrs Drelbs and I play this one all he time, so ll probably have to pick this up. As others have said - at least it's universal - having to double-dip on IAP is awful. VeganTnT Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Patreon Gold Patreon Bronze Jul 19, 2008 4,490 3 0 Freelance Entertainment Analyst Orlando, FL #20 VeganTnT, Jun 19, 2013 True, but they advertised the campaign mode including putting pictures of it up on the appstore without saying it was locked. So then every time you launch the app you have to see two large icons one of which is covered in chains until you pay for the expansion (which costs the same as the app and doesn't transfer to the iPad version) I ended up buying it so I didn't have to see it and I hate the seafarers expansion :/ (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
