Square Enix’s fresh-faced hit The New York Times called “one of the best role playing games ever designed for anything” has busted onto iOS in a big way, with a slick and addictive new combat system, eye-popping HD art, and (of course) plenty of zetta awesome reasons for longtime fans to double dip. Arm yourself with psychic superpowers and battle your way through a 7-day gauntlet of action: the Reaper’s Game. THE SETUP ------------------------------------------------- Welcome to Shibuya, a mishmash of attitudes and styles in the heart of Tokyo. A boy named Neku wakes up in a crowded intersection, alone and unaware of how he got there. Then, he receives a weird text: “Clear this mission...or face erasure.” With that, Neku is thrust into a life-or-death Game that sends him scrambling down streets paved with one riddle after another... What is the Reaper’s Game? Why is Neku a Player, and what is he playing for? Will the Game really end if he survives all 7 days? Another mystery is always around the corner. THE PAYOFF ------------------------------------------------- - Intuitive, addictive combat with a twist Activate your combat abilities, or “psychs,” with simple touch commands like tapping, slashing, and dragging. Comfy with that? Control Neku and his Game partner on the same screen and take the combat up a notch. Like loot? Boost your item drops in battle with the revamped Fusion system. - Deep replay value Finish the main story to unlock a hilarious bonus chapter, more quests and items to find, new combat challenges, and secret reports that flesh out the story even more. - Explore a living, breathing city Neku’s sprawling world is based on the real-life Shibuya in Tokyo. Visit real locations and absorb some real Japanese culture through a hip fantasy lens. - Redrawn art and Retina display support Enjoy the game in full HD on your Retina-enabled iPhone 4 or later device. Art and animation across the game has been redrawn just for this release, making combat a beautiful experience. This is how all 2D classics should look. - The ultimate soundtrack: 60 songs Composer Takeharu Ishimoto’s complete, sonically sublime soundtrack is included right in the game with high-quality audio and full vocals, including remixes and new songs. THE VERDICT ------------------------------------------------- Praise for the original The World Ends with You: “Compelling and immaculately presented...from start to finish” – Gamespot “Nails just about everything it tries – and it tries quite a lot” – IGN AU “Full of mysteries and surprises, interesting characters” – The New York Times “A compelling risk/reward system that...amply blesses the daring” – 1UP “Ice-cool artwork...impossibly catchy soundtrack” – Eurogamer “Games rarely have things this interesting to say” – G4TV DS Best RPG/Best Story/Best New IP and DS Game of the Year – IGN Information Seller:SQUARE ENIX Genre:Action, Role Playing Release:Aug 27, 2012 Updated:Jun 24, 2020 Version:1.2.5 Size:2.6 GB TouchArcade Rating: User Rating: (9) Your Rating:unrated Compatibility:HD Universal Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel the-iek Active Member Jul 16, 2010 27 0 0 #2 the-iek, Aug 26, 2012 Any info about retina graphics in this version? MARl0 Member Dec 31, 2011 21 0 1 #3 MARl0, Aug 26, 2012 I'd like to know this as well. I somehow doubt that it actually has iPad retina support. It probably runs at native resolution on an iPad 2, but not on the new iPad. Either way, it's the iPad version for me. pka4916 Well-Known Member Jun 6, 2009 2,584 0 36 Male Wisconsin #4 pka4916, Aug 26, 2012 I played the DS version years ago.. so paying $20,- for this..... nah... I'll pass. penguinspl Well-Known Member May 19, 2012 63 0 0 #5 penguinspl, Aug 26, 2012 This is a must buy for me.I was thinking about final fantasy dimensions but now i got simple choice.!!!!!Cant wait till 2morrow Fimb Well-Known Member May 12, 2010 364 0 0 #6 Fimb, Aug 26, 2012 So it's not compatible with the iPad 1, huh? Shame. Glad I played this back then on the DS. strivemind Well-Known Member Aug 11, 2010 2,784 2 38 Designer Ottawa, Canada http://www.strivemind.com/ #7 strivemind, Aug 26, 2012 Pulled, or not available in Canada yet? Anyways, I played through this on my DS a while back, and absolutely loved it. One of my favorite games ever. Even without the dual mixed gameplay (juggling different combat systems on top and bottom screen), this is still a fantastic action RPG with full AAA quality and length. Highly recommended. soldat7 Well-Known Member Jul 12, 2011 754 0 16 #8 soldat7, Aug 26, 2012 Not sure but the only say iPhone 4 Retina...that's unsettling. GodSon Well-Known Member Mar 12, 2009 3,373 0 36 #10 GodSon, Aug 26, 2012 This was one the best DS games of all time for me and I have no problem shelling out a dub once this available. I can only imagine how well this looks and plays on the big screen. Since I like to play for long amounts of time I thought to get it for my iPad. However I'm so used to playing on the go that I wanted it for my iPhone... Tough call. I figured I'd go with the same logic I used for Final Fantasy Tactics and buy the iPhone version. That way I can place it on both devices and figure out the best one for me with only a small concession for using it on the iPad if I go that route. Sadly, Square Enix has decided to restrict the iPhone version to only run on an iPhone which forces users to buy it twice. This is on par with USM creating a bug in Catan which makes it unplayable on iPad. I refuse to support decisions like this, especially when it comes at the cost of 20-40 dollars for a game I already own. :/ Ravenblack Well-Known Member Feb 24, 2009 1,755 0 0 Singapore #16 Ravenblack, Aug 27, 2012 This seems like a cool feature. soldat7 Well-Known Member Jul 12, 2011 754 0 16 #17 soldat7, Aug 27, 2012 I didn't realize devs could do this...that's terrible. And it doesn't look like the iPad version supports Retina, according to GAF. the-iek Active Member Jul 16, 2010 27 0 0 #18 the-iek, Aug 27, 2012 I can confirm this, the iPad version doesn't include Retina graphics for iPad 3. geoelectric Well-Known Member Apr 22, 2010 464 22 18 San Jose, CA #19 geoelectric, Aug 27, 2012 The existing graphics look good though. Retina would make it file-size huge. But...iPhone apps can be restricted from upscaling? Seriously? soldat7 Well-Known Member Jul 12, 2011 754 0 16 #20 soldat7, Aug 27, 2012 I would have rather experienced compressed sound (like every normal iOS game) with Retina assets. It's very dishonest for them to say it supports Retina in the iPad description. (You must log in or sign up to post here.)
