If you like Cave shmups this will be right up your alley. The unique gimmick of this one is that things take place on two "layers," I guess, for lack of a better way to put it. You need to lock on with missiles to fire at things on the ground, then you have your normal forward-pointing gun to shoot things on your layer. It's stupidly hectic, and a ton of fun. It's not retina, but I doubt the original sprites were technically "retina" either. It looks fine on my iPhone 4S. currymutton Well-Known Member Oct 16, 2008 4,430 1 0 #4 currymutton, Jan 13, 2012 Humm, at least CAVE regularly gives introductory offer to fans. What I mean is, does it have that level of production value, depth and is it executed as nicely with controls and performance, etc.? If so, I'll download it, but I feel that is a pretty massive "if," since no other vertical shooters for iOS really come close to DDP Res or Esp II. If there is one that arguably does, however, it's certainly Taito's Infinity Gene. headcaseGames Well-Known Member Jun 26, 2009 1,869 0 0 Mobile Game Developer Hollywood, CA http://www.headcasegames.com #8 headcaseGames, Jan 13, 2012 it's going to be difficult to have a dedicated thread for a game like this and not sound off about such a price. It's definitely unusual, especially considering this game in particular. That being said, I'll re-post what I mentioned earlier - I saw the title and expected the 3D polygon blaster (I got the names mixed-up in my memory). I'd love to see that game come out on the phone actually, although I am suspect of how it would control (it still feels great on the console!) And a little off-topic, if that game was released on 3DS I'd gladly pay a premium price for it (hell, even this old 2D game would be great on that hardware with such a gimmick!) As for this game on iOS - I believe there are a few good reasons you don't see an overwhelming number of 2D shooters on the iDevices. Personally I dig the genre, but have never seen one which has truly felt "a great fit" on a touchscreen, although I'll argue just because it hasn't been done yet properly, does not mean it couldn't.. let's see what others have to say, in regards to Rayforce- Vally Well-Known Member Mar 18, 2009 368 0 0 #9 Vally, Jan 13, 2012 I spent a very large amount of time on Rayforce/Layer Section back in the day, so this is an instabuy for me and I'll come back with a few impressions on how well this has converted as soon as possible. It's simpler with the scoring than most Cave games. You get a large amount of score for shooting ships in the background with your laser shot - The more lock-ons you manage to fire at once, the higher score you get. Ideally, you want to be locking onto and killing larger targets last from what I remember. You can demonstrate this right at the beginning of the first level and get a nice early score boost. Memory is hazy - It's been a while even since I've played this on MAME, so it'll be nice to get back into it. Vally Well-Known Member Mar 18, 2009 368 0 0 #11 Vally, Jan 13, 2012 Last edited: Jan 13, 2012 Initial impressions - Started the game up, attempted Arcade mode and iPhone mode. From what I can tell, this is not a full port. Playing the game in Arcade mode gives the impression that this is the arcade rom in a custom emulator, hence the comparatively low file size. Touch controls in arcade mode are very weird - You're still limited to normal ship speed as in the arcade version. If you've ever tried to play Jamestown on PC with mouse controls, that's what this is like. It's not too bad and given those limitations it's surprisingly controllable, but by no means precise. iPhone mode is exactly the same from what I can tell, but with unrestricted ship speed so you can zip around the screen with ease - This is MUCH easier, and makes me wonder why they actually included arcade mode at all. All stages are unlocked at the start I think - That's quite nice. I DO like the fact that in Arcade mode, it rolls the original Rayforce attract sequence and waits for you to 'insert a coin'. Nice little bit of nostalgia there. geremy Well-Known Member May 3, 2010 101 0 0 #12 geremy, Jan 13, 2012 They included arcade mode so that scoring the arcade against the ios port wouldn't be such a cluster as it apparently is with other shmups. SuperWeird Well-Known Member Dec 9, 2010 509 0 0 #13 SuperWeird, Jan 13, 2012 I bought this game, having never played the original. And so far I think the controls suck pretty bad. The ship is SO slow to respond, if I swipe my finger across the screen it takes 2-3 seconds for the ship to catch up - way too slow! It's impossible to quickly and precisely move around in a shmup like this. Also, this game does't even come close to the quality of CAVE's shooters. No way this game is worth $11.99, in fact I'll probably delete it. squarezero Moderator Staff Member Patreon Silver Dec 10, 2008 13,715 1,240 113 Male Chief Strategy Officer Salem, Massachusetts, USA #14 squarezero, Jan 13, 2012 Funny, I would say exactly the opposite: CAVE shooters have consistently shown that touchscreens are almost ideally suited for 2D shooters of this type. Personally I found relational touch controls (when implemented well) to be more accurate and faster than joysticks in the arcade (really!). And the fact that iOS is one of the few platforms that comfortably supports a vertical orientation makes it even better suited for shmups. The reason you don't see a lot of these kinds of games in the App Store (and I would argue that that's not really the case) is the same reason why you don't see a lot shmups in other platforms: the genre is simply not that popular these days.
