Every time I see iAds in a game I am thinking of buying, it kinda puts me off. Even if I already own that app, I would hold off updating if the newest version includes the dreaded iAds even at the cost of major game updates. Most of the time, the devs will remove iAds in the next version. Food for thought?
If you think it is boring, then you do not find enjoyment out it. Look up the definition of the words and once again stop your trolling. Seriously... you have said multiple times you would stop posting here. Follow up on what you preach and stop in the thread.
If you've purchased anything from THQ, Electronic Arts or Activision, chances are you already have ads in your games Ever notice the billboards in Saints Row 2 or Burnout Paradise for instance? And unlike these independent devs, it's hard to argue that they need ~more~ money to make ends meet.
KushyKush - you bought yslandia and it has ads in it in the options screen. Not only that, its only on the screen for 5 seconds while the score is being tallied and it takes up about 1/10 of the screen. Considering if you are going for a high score, the game can take about an hour its a small amount that you see it. Ads in games have been around for a good while. Its the same type of product placement that gets added into movies. (which you pay money for). If you don't like it, you should consider another hobby. The average video gamer is in the generation of people that is incredibly hard to market and advertise too. So of course the options for a situation like this occur. Touch Arcade has really pointed out to me at how entitled some gamers can be.
Paying a premium price for a game containing ads? No, you can try to downplay this issue all you want, yet the fact remains: No other premium priced game in the same genre i know does pester its customers with ads, 100 rogues does. I'll keep an eye on the progress of this game, because frankly it doesnt seem to be a bad one. I won't purchase it as long as it contains ads though.
Wow. Lots of people in here getting angry about the idea of iAds, without seeing the actual implementation. 100 Rogues is far from perfect, but it's fun innovative, and constantly getting better. I'm still glad I spent my five bucks, even if the iAd thing isn't my favorite thing in the world. Wes, I applaud you for staying level headed and not being dragged into the muck over this. You're a class act.
Honestly.. I don't think it is. Especially at the premium price (for an iphone game) that you charge. For a game that is still, let's face it, a work in progress. We've come to expect that free games will have ads, and games you pay for won't. Is that unreasonable? I don't think so. Don't get me wrong. I do like 100 Rogues, but adding ads to a $5 game does feel like a breach of trust. Especially when they're put in after the fact, to a game I've already paid full price for. If I heard there were ads in the game I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. Also... I think a lot of the reaction here isn't just because of the one relatively non-intrusive ad. It's because if we as a community don't voice our objections about things like this, there's going to become more and more common. And then the ads will be more and more obtrusive.. In games we pay full price for...
If you decide to keep the ads, be clever with them, be totally outrageous with them. Install them into a seedy backroom of the shop. A place that nobody ever has to see, unless they really want to. A place where people are ashamed to be seen, but are always drawn back to. A place where people have to knowingly walk past the ads, to sell their loot. Just a thought.
So, to sum up, a $5 game has been out now for a very long time, updated constantly, and yet here we are and it's still buggy as hell and now has an iAD to boot. All the while it carries a premium price and has never been on sale to entice people like me sitting on the fence. I think I've just decided to remove this from my wish list. The dev's etc have had plenty of time to convince me to buy but they have failed to fix the game and show any care for the paying public in my eyes. I really don't see the problem with creating one update that only deals with fixing all the bugs. I'm no programmer but I do deal with people and some of the attitude now on display towards those who are expressing their concerns is pretty arrogant. I'm done.
We understand your guys concerns, and I can promise you they'll be addressed for the next patch. More details coming soon, but the next version we are choosing to call "Version 2.0", and it will be worthy of the title. -Keith Burgun, Lead Designer
Nail, meet head. If you stay quiet at the little increments before you know it you have a permanent banner ad in a £5 game. People will do as much as they can get away with. It's like the DLC cost on MW2, people were up in arms but people still paid for it and low and behold, Activision will now charge £12 for map packs as standard. Companys exist to make money, I get that, but to put in a banner with no mention in the change log and just hope we all shut up is ignorant at best. I love the game, I look forward to 2.0, but this needs to change.
I wish I could do more. The sad fact is that the bugs that remain are things I can't reproduce, or things that I know will take weeks, possibly longer, to fix. We've promised content updates to our players. Players on this forum constantly, and reasonably, demand them. Within the last page, at least one person has used our inability to produce the third playable class as evidence that we aren't working hard enough, that we don't have the right to include an ad in the game. 5 of this game's updates to date have been mostly to fix bugs. The additional content that's been added has been added because it's been relatively easy to do as an extension of those bug fixes. I am doing what I can, all I can, to work in both content and stability directions at once. I am one programmer. I humbly admit my inexperience and, to a certain degree, ineptitude. But the game exists the way it is right now because it could not exist in any other way. At one point, launching was not an option, it was a mandate, and every second since then has been another one in which the promised features (shop, classes, worlds) went unfulfilled. This is why things like Fire Tiles get added with a bug fix for monsters walking onto the same tile at the same time; I find ways to do both with the same code. Failed though it may have been, the intent to include a Beta version of Hell should demonstrate my efforts to rectify our lack of testing support, to reduce the stability problems that people have. It should also demonstrate our need for additional revenue from things like iAds; we simply can't afford testers. We felt this was a kinder treatment than charging for the Hell update, forcing people to pay for content they may never see due to the game's difficulty. After all I've done, and all the time I've spent on this forum, it really tears me up to be called arrogant or uncaring. All I've asked is that those people that actually see the potential in this game, those that want to make it better, also post on our actual forums at 100rogues.com. Not because I'm not looking here, but because my boss doesn't look here, at least not as frequently as the game's forums. I can't ask players to care about our game. But there is a lot of good, and a lot of passion, and a lot of drive to improve it from us and from many players, and I would hope you recognize that.
Anyone calling you that would be out of line, and you are correct, however I am led to believe this was not your decision and the boss who made it did not communicate fully with you guys, it's his responsiblity and any "insults" should be thrown his way. For the record you have done a great job of communicating with us and a great job on the game (I don't give a shit about bugs, I still love it). You have right now probably the best Roguelike on the app store by a mile, with 16-bit design, great music, much better look and feel etc... Just some more polish and it will be perfect, no one has ever said that wasn't the case. All this started due to an add in a premium paid app, thats the problem that needs fixing, the lack of new classes can wait.
I just want to pop in here and say... give the developers a break! I agree that this app has had more sour moments than good ones, but it's still my favorite roguelike (and I own them all). Although the idea of seeing an iad on paid app bother me; it's really not that big of a deal. It's not like the hulu app that has you pay $10 a month and makes you WATCH commercials before seeing what you actually want to see. Obviously the developers aren't making enough money to help them with development for the game, and I've been keeping a close eye on their plans, and I know it's going to be totally worth it. Can we just... for now... step out of our anger bubbles and try to not make this issue bigger than what it is?
I'd like to apologise first and foremost for my earlier post, which is sometimes what happens when I haven't had enough sleep! My comment about arrogance I'd like to take back, so for that I am sorry. However, some of the other points I made still stand, notably the one regarding lack of a sale to bring in a wider customer base. Other titles like Sword of Fargoal have been free before now and launched at 59p. I just don't see how 100 Rogues can be priced the same all the time despite not being complete.
Mostly the reason is that we didn't want to be screwing early adopters, that have been the ones to put up with the game's defects since day 1. It seemed a bit tacky, and unfair to those that eagerly bought the game at full-price, to go on sale within the first six months of the game's life. I could go off on a rant about the perceived worth of App Store games compared to similarly indie titles on Steam, but the oatmeal made a more enjoyable read: http://theoatmeal.com/blog/apps
Nice o.o Hmm I've been experiencing a major bug because of which i cannot see the Ads aforementioned in this thread o.o I hope this bug is NOT fixed~ I love this game. Period. Don't care how long you people take to fix the existing bugs or adding new content. BUT~ Assess the current situation from this point of view: Devs - Add Ads ingame(w/o any warning or mention in the change log) citing financial problems(which everyone has thanks to Mr.Economy). Early adopters and current customers/users - Pissed and post nasty reviews on itunes. Random guy/gal browsing for a game - Reads the reviews, Looks past the good reveiws, and decides not to buy this game atall no matter how good it is. Conclusion : 1. You lose 5$ you COULD have gotten from a new customer. 2. The existing lot stops playing the game, so you don't get ad revenue anyway. Its a clear Lose-Lose situation for you people o.o So i am not going to ask for the removal of the Ads because You ARE going to remove them P.S. Good luck handling the Satans (THE Customer!)
News flash: That's with every product on the planet. Early adaptors pay more than those who wait for a few months.
iap or ads for further development is ok, but ads for fixing bugs is not ok. however i dont understand why i dont see any ads? device is not jb.
