Got the feeling the hype on this game ends way before the bug fixes / game enhancements arrive. Sad story.
Maybe. It's already starting to feel that way. Do I regret paying $5 when it launched? Yeah, honestly I do. I really haven't enjoyed it at all. But when I buy new apps, I always do so knowing there may be problems, so I don't get angry when there are problems. I'm still supportive toward this game. I still believe there is a good core product there, and hope that a few months from now that product will be fixed, polished and enhanced into what I was hoping to have when I bought it. But I'm a patient person. I totally understand people who bought it and are outright angry and frustrated - I can't blame them. This was a classic case of media hype, I'm afraid. Nothing nefarious or devious, I'm absolutely sure the devs wanted to deliver the best game possible. But the product and the hype were, unfortunately, very out of sync. At least, so far. Hopefully in the future, everyone will be loving this game, and thankful they bought it.
In my humble opinion, i don't think so. Developers are aware of all the problems following the official release of the game, and this issue has been discussed many times here on the forum. Personally, i don't believe even for a second that 100 Rogues is dead and buried before showing its full potential. An update is on it's way as we're speaking, and another, as i know and i've read here on TA, is imminent. I'm not a tester, i'm not paid for playing it; i'm only a player and i like this game so much and i believe in the good faith and hard work of Dinofarm Games so far, even of this means many updates, fixes and correction.
Only from me. That's just how long I personally think it'll be for the game to be fully debugged, and also enhanced with more/improved content and options (i.e. control options). Maybe it will take less time, maybe more. Or maybe (I never assume anything in this world) the game will never be finished. Honestly, we won't know until we know... ya know?
Perhaps you are, but the App Store world isn't that patient. There are great games coming up nearly every single day. Many (most?) of them are working from start. But I still keep 100 Rogues on my device, just out of curiosity. But I haven't touched it for a long time, since I got bored playing these quite small and shallow levels over and over and over again. This game clearly isn't THAT deep, complex and good that you are still thrilled diving into it. At least, I feel like having seen everything.
I don't think you even read the description...the game isn't "about" being "deep" or "complex"...you DO know what a rogue-like is, don't you?
Roguelikes are often very complex games, nethack is often very off putting to new players because of the extreme learning curve. There may be a simplicity to their goal, go as deep as you can and kill whatever is at the bottom and claim your prize, but their is an insane complexity in how you get there and do that. EDIT.
The thing is, I got them all (at least on the idevices). I'm pretty sure now, what I'm talking about. And if you just have got a hand full of enemies, a hand full of items and relatively small levels, things get old very quickly. EDIT: And that's not even related to any genre. But this game needs to offer a lot more to hold my interest for a long time. It's just not that entertaining anymore, personally.
My biggest peeve with this game is it is SOOO short. It took me literally years before I faced the Balrog in Moria. THAT was a Rogue-Like. This is more like a Rogue-Lite. I just feel it finishes before it hardly gets started and for me that's so counter-spirited to how all other Rogue-Likes have played in the past. Jamie
It is also known as the pinnicle of roguelikes. I wasnt really talking about the app store, but the genre.
I haven't even played 100 Rogues...but I guess you'd hate Tetris eh? NEXT "often very complex games"...interesting phrase. please support your proposition with more than one example? to my knowledge there aren't very many roguelikes that aren't, well, too much like rogue to be differentiated. I am poorly educated and hardly literate though :-( nethack is a roguelike by the very loosest definition, OK. did this game claim to be Nethack? no...have you played Rogue? not a terrible lot of depth there... EDIT: just wanted to add, that the fact that SOME roguelikes are complex doesn't necessitate the fact that OTHERS are complex. but while we're on the subject. while analyzing a roguelike, perhaps 100 rogues is a meta-roguelike? perhaps crashes can be seen as a sort of a "trap." you figure out what causes them OFTEN and then avoid it, just as in nethack, you can't always avoid things that are OFTEN traps. moreover, 100 rogues is actually attaining some financial success. OFTEN roguelikes don't do that. *MY* real issue here is the one I have with entitlement. this is directed to the general tone of this thread, not to any specific person. "I payed $5, I expect to get a working game." Forgive me for missing the plank that may be in my eye, but unless you've never payed for any significant number of THINGS in your life, you will realize that you are NOT entitled to ANYthing you expect to get, even for free. in fact, you can expect NOT to get it, many times, if you are honest with yourself. and then you talk about the APP STORE - I mean come ON! ever bought anything from IT? seriously!!! you can pay $1000 and not have any reasonable expectation the thing you bought will work! it's the APP STORE! add to that that apple makes a point to make you read that there is NO warranty (unlike on say, a $1000 laptop) and states quite clearly that all sales are final (even though they will usually refund you). both Apple and experience have taught you quite clearly that you are not entitled to, nor do you deserve, nor are you guarenteed a working game. in this case, many of you gave your $5 away before the reviews were out, and the game had time to simmer, KNOWING the app store's history. "but the hype was so great, it was WRONG!" OK, simmer down. next time give your $5 to a (real, worthwhile) charity. instead of coming on a forum whining about your entitlement issues for weeks or maybe months in this case, becoming emotionally distraught over it (or at least writing histrionically, as if $5 actually MEANS something to you), perhaps you'll simply go to sleep feeling a bit better that night, and then not have those weeks of whining and emotional torment about whether or not it will be updated and fixed. OR, talk to the devs, find out if their intent is to fix it or not. who they are. if they're evil people, warn others. if they're not, don't. don't speculate. don't sit here and say "they're PROBABLY this," when you have no clue. this could be someone's LIFE you're talking about, putting down their reputation. I ask humbly that before you decry ANY developer, please show some form of proof! here comes the argument...."a month is enough time to..." blah blah. You don't know what's happened in their life. maybe their wife just died. I'm serious. sure, it's unlikely, but there are THOUSANDS of games on the app store, statistically it probably has happened to a dev or two who has released a game. maybe real things in real life are happening, real people are being helped or hurt or broken or dead, and giving you your "$5 value" just isn't as important at this moment. or maybe the devs are really lying, cheating stealers. so where's the proof?
So, you haven't even played it? Why writing long posts in here, if you don't know, what we are talking about? Btw, I like Tetris ... and PAC-MAN
More examples? Angband, ADOM, Chunsoft's mystery dungeon series, Omega(though I havent played it)...I havent played every one, but the major ones are all pretty complex games. Look at the amount of items, weapons, classes, monsters, quests, NPC's, and then look at the amount of ways you can interact with them. I said often, because there are shallower roguelikes, but these games really dont get much attention, and are often works in progress or unfinished games working towards something similar to the bigger games. And Nethack is only loosly a roguelike now?
Oh, I LIKE this! I like it a LOT!!! This is all about PERSPECTIVE, man... we need to adjust our MINDS! *Rolling All Over the Floor, Laughing My Freaking Bohiney Off* Guys, I've seen the light! It's our sense of *entitlement* that's causing the issue here! Now, after all these years, I finally understand how business is actually supposed to work: As a consumer, you buy stuff, and if it's totally busted, you just suck it up! Oh blessed revelation!
Developer here Hey all, I'm the lead designer of 100 Rogues. I've made a lot of posts in this thread, but it's gotten pretty long, and it seems like there's some speculation about how much the developer is interacting and how much we care about making 100 Rogues great. I want to make 100 Rogues perfect, but not because you asked for it. I just want to make a great game, and I recognize that right now, the software-side issues are keeping some of you from seeing it that way. We are working our asses off, not just on improving stability and performance, but also adding content. Wes is really in charge of the stability/performance side, so I'm sure he'll pop in soon to give y'all an update. But the news from the creative side is: * We designed (again) the look and personality of the Skellyman Scoundrel, which is going to be the 3rd class to be added, sometime in the next couple months. We decided that she's going to be a sort of psychotic, bloodthirsty type, who expresses her demented will in a sort of sick poetry. * We changed the COOK monster into a GINGERBREAD MAN. That's all I'm going to say. Anyway, we're doin lots of stuff, and 1.03 is in review right NOW! So it should be out soon! Also, did you guys check out the strategy guide from NoDPad.com? Go check it out: www.nodpad.com Take care, and we love you and 100 Rogues! -Keith
