Such is the way of the roguelike. The better you play, the less likely "bad luck" will kill you. The pitfall/windfall element of roguelikes are one of the selling points of the genre. I'm sure you don't complain when you find a +3 dagger on floor 1. =]. Also, there is an easy mode available.
The rants on how hard this game can be is pretty similar to when Monster Hunter came to the wii and no one knew how hard the game really was if they never played it on the PS or the PSP (BTW not chewing on anyone that never played these games). Anyways getting out of topic right there. After the new update i'm amazed how much easier the game can be with a shield. Now I need to figure out if I should by pass the Heal ability in favor for damage output (Axe ftw).
Luck is only part of what determines your survival in this game, if you're feeling like you're running from your life maybe you're rushing it, personally I use a more defensive approach to this game, (made it only to lvl 6 once myself @ normal, but o well, I'll get better) I take teleport and purify, and ALWAYS have enough mp for a teleport, tele stab only if there's nothing else or my def is very high and I'm good with purify. If low on mp and don't want to use a pot (cheap like me) just press skip a lot (don't sleep, press skip several times with no enemies nearby, as sleeping doesnt really regen mp, which for fairy might as well be an extention of the hp itself). Hope it helps, the most important thing is not giving up and trying again, remember to go for the highscore
Egad! Just my luck. The dungeon before I received 2 potions, 2 ring of accuracy, and an axe. A nice welcome party appears once I stepped in.
Easy mode Only for the first five levels... And no, I don't complain when I get good drops. Except, of course when they come so frequently as to make the game too easy. Most of us call that feedback, but feel free to call it complaining if you wish. It doesn't matter to me one way or another so as long as it gets read by those who matter.
Thx for advice, however the food mechanic prevents me from resting up between fights. Unless, of course, I get LUCKY. In a previous post I suggested that the game kill you outright if the dungeon doesn't generate enough food when the game starts. I stand by that comment.
Well, dunno about you, but so far I normally only find 1 food until the boss (which also has 1 additional food) to a total of 3, that's why I said not to rest, just skipping enough turns to get the mana you need to survive. On lvl 6 tho, I was at 20 as soon as I got in there (took ages to kill genie) so unless you kill it fast or lv 6 has food in it, I'll probably die next time.
For the Ethereal bugs after you beat the genie. It looks like with the crusader you can attack them with magic to soften them then attack normally. Is there any other way to attack without using magic on them?
I'm not talking about a game that already has it because the devs will be hard pressed to change it. I am talking about this game that doesn't need it to begin with.
I was just making a joke. Dinofarm games welcomes ALL feedback, good or bad. We plan to work with the community all the way to give you the most balanced, solid, enjoyable experience possible. No offense intended.
I'm glad that you take pride in listening to feedback, but I hope that you're judicious in what you take seriously and what you don't. You should stick to your vision of a tough Shiren-like roguelike that doesn't care if you live or die. You should play a few rounds of it for inspiration. The things it does well are subtle but really great. It makes concessions to fairness, but it's unfriendly at its core. The enemies are tough and annoying (remember the exploding blowfish?) and often do things that remind you that you're not invincible behind all of your great equipment. You often find yourself taking reckless gambles to find food. Sometimes the weapons that drop are a poor match against the enemies on the floors ahead. You die and that's just the way it goes. It doesn't matter because the game is fast and strategically interesting even early on. You guys have a lot of work to do, but you're doing a great job with this. Once you implement all you've got planned, it's hard to see this not being one of the top 5 games on the platform.
I have been playing this game a lot recently. I have made it down to level 5. My biggest issue is the food mechanic makes survival somewhat random and non skill based. Please consider tweaking food to draining your health to 25% and not regain mana. Also disable earning xp when you are not fed. This should be enough to kill off dumb players and still keep things interesting for good players. Also please do something about the control scheme. I keep occasionally move instead of attack. Maybe add a button for attack nearest.
Yeah, I've got to admit I'd like to see some changes to the food mechanic. I'm not sure this is the answer, but I'd rather see penalties to skills or mana or total hit points than death. I know food and roguelikes go hand-in-hand, but it always feels like a crappy way to die. Killed by rampaging rats that surround you? Fine. Killed by feeling hungry and not being able to find a bite to eat? Not so fun.
I personally find the food mechanic just perfect, but the shield bug is killing the fun from my game. Back to the shieldless gaming
Actually it looks like Monsters have priority, so they make turn first. If u advance to neighboring square they are not attacking, because they already did action. Same like with moving away, they attack at first and then your action happens. Personally i prefer if player takes action first, it does not change a lot because then hero will be atacked not if he tryes to run away, but when he advances to the monsters. And please think about implementing dioganal movement! ranged monsters are too weak but so annoying!
Personally, I like that there is an element of chance involved and it is not 100% skill based. If it were, once you found the best strategy for making it through the game there would be no need to replay it. Chance means you will be challenged to varying extent on various play-throughs. I don't care that it means some games will be doomed to failure. That's part of the fun with a game like this, and whoever said you may as well end the game at level 1 if not enough food spawns, sorry but you are missing the point.
btw, after update fairy teleport is broken. it teleports sometimes to random spots, not the one that was chosen. At least in initial release teleport always worked properly.
On the food mechanic debate, I think it would be more manageable if hunger did damage every other turn, not -1hp every turn. Also the "Faith" skill for the Crusader, or whatever it's called, seems really underpowered. Took it at the first level yesterday and didn't see it get used at all until it squashed a bug during the level 5 boss battle.
