Alright, I need help with challenge 9. It's all I have left!

Ahh, I'm getting more crashes now than I did before the update. Once just as I equipped a robe and one random crash while moving shortly after equipping a +2 dagger. Both on the very first floor.

Edit: apparently I haven't been playing the update at all, despite having downloaded it as soon as it was up. Odd.

Just wanted to say I LOVE this game, been following it since Dec.
And that I FREAKING HATE GYPSIES. (Just like you said I would!) X.x

However I'm beginning to think that they (gypsies) might be a little OP'd.
    ex:

    1) I'm 6 squares away, one tele-swaps me into the middle of a pack of somewhere between 4 and 4 million monsters.
(OK, not really 4 million, but it has to be at least every monster in the stinking level.) Btw, ~3-4 of them are gypsies.

    2) I then try to use my inventory to take out as many critters as I can, and get away. Unfortunately, every gypsy manages to hit me 99% of the time, but when I try to retreat, every one manages to hit me 10 times (total) per 1 of my moves. This wouldn't be as annoying to watch if you had a "skip to next turn" button that skips over the animations and just lets you make your next move. Or at least a "speed up animations" button?

    3) On the occasion I am able to get next to one, it then becomes a game of "chase the s.o.b. until it's cornered, and kill it". All that time, I'm getting swarmed by a mob of other blood-thirsty monsters that want my hide as well.

At any rate, the gypsies are waaaaay more of a pain-in-the-butt to deal with than I originally thought.

On another note, how do you get the challenges in the list? Mine is empty, but I see others asking for help with their challenges. Did they just not upgrade, or is there some process to get this?

    Thanks,
    alf666

I hadn't been playing the update after all, my initial download of it must have failed or something.

Actually, I have played a lot of grid based role playing games, but no tabletop games like Dungeons and Dragons. I can only think of one grid based video game that had a punishment for disengaging combat, and that was the electronic adaptation of Blood Bowl, a table top game.

I can't think of any roguelikes (Shiren for DS and Wii, Izuna, Nethack, Dwarf Fortress, Rogue Touch, Powder, etc.) that give enemies attack priority above player movement. I can't think of any SRPG's (Nippon Ichi games, Final Fantasy Tactics series, Heroes of Might and Magic, King's Bounty, etc.) that use that system either. I really don't think that system is that common at all in the electronic mediums.

I understand now why you did it, but it can cause problems when the control scheme allows for mistakes like misreading an attack order as a move order. What could have been a shift to the side and possibly staying alive leads to getting hit by everything in range before scooting a step over.

It is common in american PC rpgs like temple of elemental evil and arcanum. And I do believe there are attacks of opportunity in powder, but I may be mistaken.

Anyhow, yes, misclicks are a bit of an issue sometimes. Once you get used to the feel, they happen less and less frequently. It's really up to keith and wes about a Dpad option, but in the meantime, you'll find misclicks will happen less and less often.

I'd just like to say that the genie of the 5th level wouldn't die, but couldn't be attacked any moreĀ— making progress impossible. This was true before and after the update for me. I eventually died of hunger.

I love the foundations of this game, but I hate the reality of it. This is clearly a learn as you go project. As eager as I'd been to play this game it should have been developed for at least another month before being released. I feel more or less duped.

I know this game could be great, and I hope that you'll keep on working on it to make it so. I just wish it was great right when I paid for it.

Did you know that the genie can be attacked in both the lamp and himself? That might help.

My admittedly limit experience is that attacks of opportunity don't have a 100% success rate. But whatever, that's part of this game's mechanics, so it's really no biggie.

As far as your Tetris rant goes. I don't think you've reasoned things out too well. I'd be interested in seeing what you think of this essay.

Yes. The lamp shatters and the genie just sticks around shooting fireballs and summoning beetles. I can throw some things if I target behind it from an angle and that hurts the genie, but nothing kills it and I can't attack it with meelee weapons or target it (or the lamp). I've tried everything short of the chicken dance.

I could be mistaken, but it seems the actual character you play doesn't get this particular advantage. At least, I seem to recall gypsies just being able to run from me after I've moved next to them. Shouldn't your own character then be able to attack the running gypsy?

Well, from a design point of view I guess I can see why you don't, because that would probably bug up something nasty in the case of you having 2 or more enemies next to you running away, guess that's the answer.

Oh and another suggestion, please shorten the animation for the Scroll of Unholy Fire. The one I used literally took over 10 seconds before it finally ended up hitting and killing the enemies I meant to take out with it.

I'm finding the ability to insanely max out my armor rating as well. All I have to do is take two shields and keep equip switching between them without exiting the menu and now my armor rating is 297. Everything does 0s... it's kind of unfair. I'm going to restart the game and actually try to beat it legitimately, the farthest I've ever gone is the Dungeon 2, I believe.

Wes, I just wanted to let you know. ;) You should probably fix this, or people could cheat and get insanely high scores. The only thing that damages you with a 297 armor rating is hunger or magic.

Well, what I did was: I was playing with fairy, broke the lamp, then started teleporting to the left side o the genie, whack it a bit until bettles came or health low, then tele right and do the same focusing always on the genie, if low on mana/health i'd use a pot and teleport far and started killing beetles for more pots, after a while (long while) it died, I think the last hit I did it seemed like I had aimed an arm, but I think that was my imagination. I also could hit him if he wasnt 100% on my radar scope, so maybe that's you problem as well.

Or you could do it like me and just throw two energy potions at him. :p

Oh well, I guess we all have out strategies... (or I just don't like using the pots for throwing unless almost no other choice).

Do you aim @ the lamp to hit both with both potions?

I would love to implement an "automatic" attack if an enemy tries to leave your threatened square. It rarely happens (other than gypsies) but when it does, you're right, your character should automatically take one. Also, as to the 100% part, that's where "misses" come into play. An enemy can "miss" and attack of opportunity, so it'sn ot 100%. Furthermore, the skelly scoundrel may have a "tumble" like system, which is meant for avoiding attacks of opportunity.

as to your essay, I haven't read it yet. When I do, I'll get back to you.

Are you guys gonna implement or is implemented already, some type of "counter" equipment where you have a x% chance of countering a received atk (be it only short range, long range or both)? I love the idea of countering.

I had picked up some throwing knives and had a sack of 3 and a sack of 2. I combined them and then the game crashed. Is that a known issue? Random issue?

Love that I can go longer now though! That was my only crash so far with the new update.

I've read a great deal of this thread and individual strategies notwithstanding, I have come to the conclusion that it needs to be tweaked to make it a bit easier.

No matter what class I play or what skills I select, I always feel a bit outmatched. A simple solution to this, however is to change the food mechanic so the player doesn't need to plunge downward before they are ready. By the time I get to the second dungeon level, I am continually running for my life, hoping for a lucky break.

And when luck consistently determines whether or not you survive, you might as well stop, and start playing solitaire.
