People don´t play because is poorly implemented, waiting only 15 secs is too little time to find someone, people gets tired to race against AI...
Human racers use nicknames and usually have a different level than yours. AI racers use real names. The game is great but needs a better online...
Multiplayer needs some kind of lobbys, events, campionships.. to make it more fun. It is difficult to find a balanced race although is still fun....
So what's up with nicknames in multiplayer? If you are not logged into facebook you appear as offline player or with your nickname? Or gamecenter

If you payed for the game then it sucks. Still it offers the best racing experience imo. Multiplayer is fun now.
