That was a glitch too because I went back and that friend is now showing as only level 30.
It actually happened to me about an hour ago. I was visiting someone else's island, clicked on a party hat, and got a leveled up to level 32...

Decided to rename one of my Lichens "Lucky." I sent Lucky into my regular breeding cave with my favorite Crystal "Dusty" and.....31 hour...
