Perhaps the device itself has orientation-lock enabled? Double tap the Home button, swipe right, and check the button to the left of the music...
Rotate your device ;) There's an option to lock the orientation in-game once you've rotated it to your liking.
Don't bother waiting for a HSS sale.... buy it and enjoy, it beats waiting for 1-2 or even more months to save only a dollar or two.
