No actually "lycan" is refering to the race from underworlds. It's just lycanthropes is the on that isn't coined. But I don't think it matters...
@arc417 seems like somebody knows their stuff. I knew that the bible has been altered quite a few times (see Lilith) but not that much.
actually yes and no, underworlds got it from a greek term lycanthropes which in english means werewolf.
