The star is there only for creating the system, as you say. You can't visit them, destroy them, etc. I think you lose cargo and some money, but...
You warp quite near the station, but you have to set the S speed to get to it. If you fight first, you have to destroy all enemy ships before...
If fighting and destroying ships is too difficult at the beginning, I'd try and do exploration/travelling missions first. The geographer missions...
