Yea in general its not worth spending gold recruiting at the tavern. You'll need it for your job changes later on.
Did you do the recruiting with gold? That only gives you monsters. The really good guys are recruited using energy.

FYI Metal Zone 1 only levels your guys up to 20. You'l need Metal Zone 2 after that which unlocks after chapter 8....
