You drop items on death in Terraria too. Adventure games should have a risk vs reward factor.
Terraria isn't very good with a controller to be honest. The game was designed to use a mouse, and the console versions make that very obvious....

The jungle is arguably the most difficult area in the game (along with the dungeon) so don't worry if you're getting destroyed... that's normal....
