I can answer the first question for you. It's 30 hours of game play, so that includes main and side quests.
There's a quest called "The Sisters of Night" and you have to kill three witches. One of them drops a wolf mount.
If you play with fixed 3rd person fixed, you can actually move backwards while on the mount instead of turning.
Playing as the mage, I find it kind of bothersome that my spells can damage/affect my fire elemental. Not sure if that was intentional or not.
