You're selling DU2 short Soldat. The graphics are far better in DU2 than Raiden. Raiden4 would be the closest. DU2 is a much more unique game....

I don't regret paying the full price. It's a great game.
You'll die very quickly if you don't have auto-fire. I'm old-school too. That being said, it shouldn't be that hard to implement.
