SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between’, ‘Dysmantle’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for March 31st, 2022. I’ll level with you, dearest of chums: I got my vaccine booster yesterday and today I am as sick as a dog. For a couple of hours there I couldn’t even move, I felt so heavy. But I pounded back some medicine and made my way to TouchArcade Towers so that I could make sure you’ve got the latest Switch goodies to read. News! New Releases! Sales! It’s a bumper crop today, everyone. Let’s go to it while I can still hold my head up!

Surprise! More Retro Games Have Come to Nintendo Switch Online

Wow, March has been quite the month for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, especially those with the Expansion Pass. New Mario Kart 8 tracks, F-Zero GX, a few new Genesis games… but what about our pals that just have the basic subscription? They’re probably almost finished Earthbound Beginnings and Earthbound by now. Well, three games for the NES and Super NES apps more or less dropped out of the sky today. On the NES, we’ve got Namco’s Mappy-Land and Dig Dug II. Over on the Super NES, the amazing annelid Earthworm Jim arrives on his Pocket Rocket in Earthworm Jim 2. Just update your apps and you’ll have access to all of those games. Not bad!

New Releases

Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between ($12.99)

Glitchhikers: The Spaces Between sends you on one of four different types of journey. You can take a walk in the park, head out on a road trip, ride a train, or spend the night in an airport. Each of these slices of travel will see you meeting others who are out and about themselves, and they all want to have some serious chats with you. These characters are pretty unusual, and some of the things they want to talk about are very heavy. If you played the rather short original Glitchhikers, you’ll know what you’re getting here. There’s just more of it. For those who haven’t? Well, if you like a strong narrative experience, this will likely deliver.

Red Wings: American Aces ($11.99)

Red Wings: Aces of the Sky was a reasonably fun arcade-style dogfighting game, and this follow-up more or less treads in its footprints. Play through a thirty-mission single-player campaign, grab a buddy for local co-op, or hop online with up to nine other players for some thrilling action. Upgrade your pilot by placing points on their skill tree, and slide into the cockpit of fifteen different warplanes. If you enjoyed the previous game, you won’t find much to disagree with here.

The Card Perfect Collection ($14.99)

Yes, it’s a collection of card games. Calling it “perfect" is a bit a bold claim, but it’s better than a lot of the other card games on thee eShop. I mean, so is buying a real deck of cards. So what do you get here? Solitaire in four flavors: Klondike, FreeCell, Spider, and Couple. You also get six different games that can be played competitively, either via local wireless or online. Those games include: Texas Hold’em, Blackjack, Hearts, Sevens, Daifugo, and Page One. You can adjust the rules a bit for each game, and the presentation isn’t too shabby. If you want a whole bunch of card games, this is a decent pick-up for the price.

Dysmantle ($19.99)

Oh, what does 10tons have for us this time? It’s a survival game! Set in the zombie apocalypse! Wait, come back! It’s actually really good. See, you can smash pretty much everything. All of it. Smash it all, collect the resources, use them towards building and upgrading equipment to help you survive. Can’t smash something? You’re going to need a better smasher. Better figure out how to make that happen. Explore the open world, mind the elements, and decide which things you need in your limited inventory and what you can leave behind. A game you can lose hours of time in, should you allow yourself to fall in. You know how these go.

Big Bang Pro Wrestling ($7.99)

The NEOGEO Pocket Color spent its entire short life couched inside one of the bigger pro wrestling booms, so it’s no surprise it had its own grappling game. It was only released in Japan, and buying a second hand copy today will run you between one and two hundred dollars depending on the condition of it. So… pretty neat that it’s the latest NEOGEO Pocket Color game released on the Switch, and it even has English language support. Code Mystics has done its usual fine work with this one, so you can expect all of the same settings and extras seen in the developer’s other NEOGEO Pocket Color re-releases.

Arcade Archives Wonder Momo ($7.99)

It’s been a bit since the last time Namco’s 1987 arcade game Wonder Momo was ported or rereleased. Indeed, I believe this is the first time the original arcade game has made it home. It’s a side-scrolling action game along the lines of things like Kung Fu Master, with an important twist. You’re playing as a transforming costumed heroine, and as you make your way through each stage you’ll have an opportunity to morph into your more powerful heroic form. As you play, an audience watches the action. Be careful with your high kicks, because some perverts will try to take a picture of your underwear, leaving you temporarily vulnerable while you try to keep him from capturing the moment. Not a great game by any means, but certainly a silly and unique one.

Princess Farmer ($14.99)

A combination of a visual novel and a matching puzzle game. That happens more often than you would think, really. In this one, we follow a simple farmer whose life completely changes after she wakes up under the Gaia Tree. She’s now imbued with magical powers, and if that sounds like a magical girl anime, you’re right on target. You get to pick how you want to interact with people, making choices at various times. Play solo, grab a buddy for local co-op, or even bring along an AI helper. The puzzling looks enjoyable enough, and the game certainly nails a colorful, cute vibe.

Cosplay Love! Enchanted Princess ($11.99)

Hm, lots of princesses today. This one is a pure visual novel where you play as an accessory/fashion designer who happens to meet a cosplaying girl who wants to partner up with you. Wacky romantic shenanigans surely aren’t far behind! I don’t think there are any meaningful choices in this one, so you’re really just riding along for the story and art.

Broken Pipe ($3.99)

This is basically Pipe Dream, except instead of using a cursor to place the pieces on a 2D board, you’re controlling a robot who has to pick up and place the pieces on a 3D board. There are twenty-nine levels in total. Well, it’s cheap.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Alright, let’s have a look at what we’ve got. Mmm, nothing too exciting, I suppose. Tokyo Dark: Remembrance I guess? Dying Light? Check through the list yourself friends, I’m not totally in my normal state here. As for the outbox, there are a lot of decent games but perhaps not a ton of must-have sales. I imagine WRC 9 won’t be seeing a ton of sales now that the new one is out, so if you’re collecting those you might want to grab that? Have a look and see.

That’s all for today and this month, friends. Provided I’m feeling a bit better, I should be back tomorrow with the rest of the releases of the week. The most notable one that comes to mind is the Digital Deluxe version of MLB The Show 22, which provides access to the game four days before the standard version. There are some other things we’ll be checking out, plus a whole mess of sales. Again, if I’m feeling okay. No guarantees at this point. I hope you all have a fantastic Thursday, and as always, thanks for reading!
