Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for October 1st, 2021. We’re kicking off the month with another hefty list of new releases, with a few interesting games and a few not-so-interesting ones. Also: some stuff in between. We’ve got summaries of them all, naturally. We also have a giant list of new sales, as we tend to on Fridays. Let’s check it all out!
New Releases
FIFA 22 Nintendo Switch Legacy Edition ($39.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
You probably know how this goes by now. This is a Legacy Edition, which means there are no new gameplay elements or features. You get updated kits, clubs, and squads, and some new stadiums. The UI has some changes, too. Otherwise, it is identical to FIFA 21 which was identical to FIFA 20 which was identical to FIFA 19 which was mostly the same as FIFA 18 which itself was a Legacy Edition of FIFA 17 on PlayStation 3/Xbox 360. So yes, enjoy the same game with only the barest of updates for the sixth year in a row because Electronic Arts can’t be bothered to do more. It’s still going to sell like wild.
SGC – Short Games Collection #1 ($19.99)
This collection pulls together five short game experiences that haven’t been released on Switch before this. You get The Good Time Garden, Ghostein, Uranus, Swallow the Sea, and A Game Literally About Doing Your Taxes. They’re all amusing enough in their own ways, but do keep in mind that it’s not fibbing about the games being short. Like, minutes-long short in some cases. Still, there are some interesting ideas in play here. I leave it up to you.
Blaze and the Monster Machines: Axle City Racers ($39.99)
The long-running educational series for kids arrives on Switch with this child-friendly racing game. Race as Blaze or one of six other characters from the show, collecting power-ups and trying to win the championship. Up to four players can race at once via local multiplayer split-screen, and there’s an auto-drive option so that even the youngest of kids can have some fun. I’m sure those who enjoy the show will have a good time with this, though keep in mind it’s probably not going to teach your kids as much as the show tries to.
Survival Z ($14.99)
Oh hey, Apple Arcade game incoming. This is a combination of tower defense and twin-stick shooter where you have to battle zombie hordes. I like the presentation on this one, it has a nice pop to it. That all said, I found this one didn’t grab me on mobile and I can’t imagine this Switch version changing my mind. Provided it does grab you, you can look forward to fifty levels, fifteen playable characters, and some interesting surprises along the way. If you have Apple Arcade, try it on there and see how you like it before deciding if you want to buy it here.
Colsword ($4.00)
A puzzle game where you have to use colored swords to paint a grid so that it matches the target. You get forty-two levels to play, and it does get a little tricky as you go through it. Mostly you just need to decide which order to use the swords in, but it can get a bit tangled as the puzzles get bigger.
Takorita Meets Fries ($4.99)
Ahh, a classic tale. A princess from a kingdom under the sea happens to venture to the world of humans, and falls in love. The princess here is Takorita, and the object of her affection is… French fries? If this was twenty or thirty years ago, that’s where you would hear the record scratch. This is a visual novel where your choices will lead to one of three different endings. There is a bit of romance, but it’s light and not really the main focus of the story. No, this is a story about someone who tasted French fries for the first time ever and becomes obsessed with finding more delicious ways to prepare them. Don’t tell her about poutine. Just be aware that it’s a bit on the shorter side of things. The game, not poutine. Poutine is plenty long.
Earth Marines ($4.99)
Who needs space marines when we’ve got Earth Marines? Wait, wouldn’t those just be normal marines? Hm. Anyway, this is a top-down shooter where you have to kill lots of zombies. Looks a bit shabby, and it’s single-player only. I know developer HugePixel has its fans, and if you’re one of them you might want to give this a closer look. I’m not, so I won’t.
2weistein – The Curse of the Red Dragon 2 ($20.00)
I guess the original game went over well enough, so here we are with a sequel. As with the original, this is an educational title aimed at elementary school kids. A whole new story sends Bernard and Celestine off on another adventure filled with math problems and other puzzles to solve. It takes the guise of a 3D adventure game and as such has a bit more oomph to its presentation than the average piece of edutainment. You can set how high the number ranges go to fit your child’s current level of mathematical skill. I’m not the target audience for this, so that’s all I can really say.
Doom & Destiny Worlds ($19.99)
The first couple of Doom & Destiny games were rough but enjoyable turn-based RPGs filled to the brim with juvenile humor that threw so many jokes at the wall that some were bound to make you laugh. This new one is spreading its wings a bit. You still get the turn-based battles and bad jokes, but there’s a survival bent to the whole thing. You need to craft, farm, and build in addition to the usual RPG elements. Up to four players can join in on this one via local multiplayer, which is neat.
Kyle is Famous: Complete Edition ($14.99)
This is an oddball choice-based adventure with a whopping one hundred and seventeen different endings. Each playthrough is very brisk, but you’re obviously meant to be playing and replaying until you find as many of those endings as you can. Probably want to reach the one very good ending, at least. Incredibly weird and random, but that may just be the kind of humor you’re looking for today.
Underland ($7.99)
QUByte’s latest is a physics-based puzzle platformer where two astronauts have come back from a mission only to find human civilization has retreated underground. If they want to find their way there, they’ll have to do some work. The path has been buried and there’s nothing for it but to dig. With lots of gimmick and machines to deal with, the puzzles offer a decent variety. I’ll have a review of this one sometime next week, hopefully.
Teacup ($9.99)
Play as Teacup, a shy frog who is planning to host a tea party at her house tomorrow. The problem is that she’s all out of tea, so she heads out to stock up on the necessary herbs. This is a non-linear narrative adventure game with a nice hand-drawn look. There some mini-games and light puzzles but overall this is a pretty chill game that is more about enjoying the various character interactions than overcoming difficult challenges.
Supersonic Tank Cats ($4.99)
A five-dollar kart racer, eh? Well, I don’t know how much to expect here. You get four different tracks to race on, and five different machines to race. Some of the usual power-ups, and support for up to four players via local multiplayer split-screen. I think the weakest point is that limited selection of tracks. Again, for the price one can only expect so much, but I can’t imagine picking this up rather than spending a little more to get something like All-Star Fruit Racing.
MMC KENKEN – The World’s Most Exciting Math and Logic Puzzle – ($28.00)
I feel like that is a dangerous claim to make, but okay. The first thing you’ll notice beyond the title is that price, which might seem a bit high for something like this. I agree, actually. But it’s not that it’s lacking in content. You get a whopping three thousand puzzles to solve here, and if that’s not enough to scratch your itch for these math/logic brain-teasers for one lifetime, I don’t know what to say. Each puzzle looks like a card with various areas sectioned out with numbers and operators. You have some number tiles and you need to fill in the blanks to make the appropriate totals. Not bad, but I think this would do better with a smaller amount of puzzles and a lower price so that people could get a taste.
Sports & Adventure Pinball ($14.99)
This is a bundle of six previously-released pinball games: World Soccer Pinball, Touchdown Pinball, Basketball Pinball, Dragon Pinball, Pirates Pinball, and Titan Pinball. They’re normally three bucks each, so you save a few bucks buying this bundle if nothing is on sale. That said, these pinball games go on sale very often for a couple bucks each. If you want to buy this, make sure it’s actually the best value at the moment.
Simple Dominoes ($2.39)
It’s just what it says it is. You can only play it in handheld mode, which suggests to me that this could be an Android template repurposed for the Switch by its publisher Gametry. Single-player only, too. There are four different modes of play including a puzzle mode with three hundred levels. It’s very cheap.
Miners Races ($2.99)
You play as a little miner and need to grab as many diamonds as you can as you race forward as fast as possible. Watch out for dangerous obstacles as you go. Up to four players can play this one at once. It looks exactly like the three-dollar game that it is. Another one from newcomer Gametry, who I suspect may be the latest template flipper on the eShop.
Stickman: Far East Battle ($3.99)
Okay, yes. Gametry, you’re officially on my radar now. This is another handheld-only game that looks very much like a template flip. Play as the little stickman and use your weapon to take out all of the enemies on each screen. You can find about a thousand games just like this on your mobile device that can be played for free.
Pool Puzzles ($3.49)
Dang Gametry, stop. Just stop. Four games in one day? At least try to make it look like you actually made these yourself. Another needlessly handheld-only title, which means it’s almost certainly another Android flip. Knock the balls in the pockets and collect coins to exchange for unlockable skins. There are one hundred and fifty puzzles here.

I’d say the highlight of today’s list of new sales is that Dotemu is running some discounts on its selection of games. Grab things like Ys Origin, Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap, and Windjammers while you can as Dotemu doesn’t do sales terribly often. Other games I feel worthy of mention: Blazing Chrome, Kunai, Superliminal, Immortal Redneck, and Dungeon of the Endless. The weekend outbox doesn’t have much in it unless you feel like stocking up on Mega Man games. Have a look through both lists yourselves, of course.
