Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for March 17th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got news of an upcoming game that was announced as well as the next event in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. We also have summaries of all of the new releases that hit the eShop today, minus one cool surprise that you’ll likely know about by the time you read this. Sorry, I have no choice but to keep it in my pocket at the time of this writing. Finally, we’ve got the incoming and outgoing sales lists. It’s another relatively quiet one today, but things will pick up significantly tomorrow as is often the case on Thursdays. Let’s go!

‘Super Bomberman R Online’ Coming to Switch
In a not entirely shocking turn of events, previous Google Stadia exclusive Super Bomberman R Online will be making its way to other platforms soon. Konami announced that the free-to-play online multiplayer game for up to 64 players will come to the Switch with all of its features intact. Although the game is free to download and play, a Premium Pack will be available for $9.99 that gives you access to 14 different characters inspired by classic Konami franchises along with some other extra features. By most accounts this was a reasonably fun game, certainly worth trying out for free when it hits. No release date yet, but I imagine we’ll have one shortly.
Purple is In with the Latest ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Event
It looks like we’re back to a Spirit Board event in this weekend’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate happenings. This time the focus is on spirits that have purple as a main color. That means the likes of Pidgit from Super Mario Bros. 2, Camilla from Fire Emblem Fates, and the Mask Salesman from The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Defeat those spirits and you’ll earn more snacks than usual. The event kicks off on Friday and runs for three days through the weekend, as these do in most cases.

Later Alligator ($17.99)

This is a weird game, and I dig it. You’re a detective investigating the potential murder (it hasn’t happened yet) of an alligator named Pat. Pat is pretty sure something bad is going to happen at some “event" his family is planning, and he’s asked for your help to discover the plot. You’ll do that by talking to a wide variety of wacky characters, each of which offers their own minigame to play. These characters are pretty funny, at least in my book, and they’re a joy to talk to. It’s not the longest of games, but if you like stupid jokes I think you’ll really appreciate this one. Quirky and cool.
Under: Depths of Fear ($9.99)
This is a short horror game with an interesting premise and an unfortunately botched execution. You play as a WW1 veteran who is suffering from post-traumatic stress and his feelings of guilt. That’s pretty bad! But you’re also on an ocean liner that is slowly sinking. Wow, double bad! So you need to find your way off the ship in time, all the while being haunted in a very literal sense by your past. Great on paper. In action, you’re doing a whole lot of bad shooting, testing doors to find the one that isn’t locked, and navigating some very confusing routes. Really only for those who love horror and are willing to put up with an awful lot of poor mechanics for the sake of it.
In Rays of the Light ($7.99)
Explore a dark, abandoned building in this game. This is what the jaunty kids might call a “walking simulator", so don’t expect any action to happen with that pipe. You’ll have to search every corner very carefully to find the clues you need to move forward, and that’s probably the most frustrating part of the game. I wouldn’t call it revelatory or anything, but it’s not too bad if you like this sort of affair. There are two endings to uncover, so there’s a little replay value there. And yes, things eventually get a bit trippy, so don’t come into it expecting rainbows and unicorns.
Beach Buggy Racing 2: Island Adventure ($19.99)
The original Beach Buggy Racing wasn’t too shabby. I wouldn’t say it was a must-have or anything, and it certainly wasn’t going to steal Mario Kart‘s lunch. But it was a pretty good choice if you were looking for another fun arcade-style racer, and I expect at least that much from its sequel. Up to four players can jump in via a split-screen multiplayer mode, but there isn’t any online play. Still, there’s a lot here thanks to the custom game modes. You can set a bunch of parameters how you like them and save them for future use. Even if you don’t have anyone to play with, there’s a fair bit here for solo players. An adventure mode, a championship mode, and of course single races are available with CPU opponents. I’m not sure how much is changed from the free-to-play mobile version, but you could play that if you want a taste of what to expect.

So yeah, not a whole lot going on in the inbox today. Some of QUByte’s games are on sale, along with the reasonably entertaining Feudal Alloy and the just-announced Genesis Noir. Nothing too pressing. The outbox is fairly hefty, but it’s not exactly packed with big names either. Dadish 2 is cool, I guess. Bonkies still has a great name. Cyanide & Happiness‘s launch sale is ending, so if you want that at a little discount, now’s the time. Have a look through the lists yourself, naturally. Not too much reading involved today in that particular process.
