Best iPhone Game Updates: ‘Dead Cells’, ‘Card of Darkness’, ‘Death Road to Canada’, ‘Fruit Ninja’, and More

TouchArcade Rating:

Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. Some very cool stuff this time around, friends. Some of my favorite games got updates this last week, as well as some games that I only pretend to care about for the purposes of grand theater. I’ve got a good selection for you to read through to get your week started off on the right foot. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!

TSM Game, Free The week after a big holiday is always fun because I get to include now-outdated events that came in at the last second. Like this Halloween update for The Sims Mobile, which re-runs the Treatsylvania Haunt event from a previous year. There’s also the new Fright Night Treasure Hunt where you can earn some witch-inspired outfits and other rewards. Setting aside the spooky stuff, this update also changes how Sims perform actions, making for a faster and more efficient process.

Angry Birds 2, Free Been a bit since we’ve looked in on Angry Birds 2, so let’s do that now. The latest update has a new Hat Evolution event, allowing you to collect some new Calavera hats and upgrades from the Tower of Fortune. Or you can just pop into the event shop and get some there. Deck your birds out in hats and participate in the Aventura Colorida. Sounds like a five-star update to me, friends.

MARVEL Future Fight, Free Marvel Future Fight keeps playing on the horror side of the Marvel Universe with its latest update. This time around the Symbiotes take the center stage, with their creator Knull appearing as a new World Boss. Venom, ever the problem child, stands against this dark god with the help of some of the Spider-Verse. New heroes join the roster in the form of Spider-Woman and Scream, while Venom, Miles Morales, and Spider-Gwen get some new uniforms that are appropriately flavored for the event. Venom gets his Tier-3, while Spider-Woman, Spider-Gwen, and Silk get their Potential Awakened/Transcended upgrades. Technically this doesn’t involve Spider-Man at all, so I’ll give it the only slightly less-coveted UMMVotW instead.

Fruit Ninja®, Free Fruit Ninja is now as old as the PlayStation 2 was when Fruit Ninja came out. Ten huge years and it’s still somehow going. People just really like cutting virtual fruit, I think. Surprised there aren’t more games about it. Anyway, the game has been given an overhaul in celebration of the milestone, with new visuals, a redesigned UI, and lots of other little improvements. Apparently this update also sets the stage for some actual big updates in the future, which should be interesting to see.

AFK Arena, Free AFK Arena, the so-called best RPG for your busy butt, got another large-sized update this last week. A new hero union, The Forsaken Family, has been added. So has the new adventure The Realm of Denial. The Barricade is a new tank-only artifact that you can pick up, along with some new class-exclusive artifact fragments you can use to upgrade it. So how do you get it? Hit up the new mode in Peaks of Time called Trials of God and beat them at the appropriate Trial level. There’s a bunch of other stuff in here from balance adjustments to bug fixes to UI improvements and even a couple of other new adventures, so be sure to check it out.

Death Road to Canada, $14.99 Ah, now here’s that hustling champion of this week’s shockingly competitive battle for the coveted UMMSotW award. Death Road to Canada is so jam-packed with content that it’s hard to imagine any more getting stuff in there without the whole thing exploding like that guy from the gross Yoshi’s Island commercial from the 90s. Yet here we are with the Kidney Update, adding everything from unlockable hats to two new game modes to headlights and taillights for cars. You know… the important stuff. The update notes for this one are as descriptive as they are lengthy, so I’ll leave it to you to check them out if you want the full skinny. Suffice it to say, if you haven’t fired this game up in a while or haven’t played it at all, it’s time to do that little thing.

Need for Speed No Limits, Free The racing game that does not recognize boundaries of any kind, particularly those involving automobiles and their speed, got a nice and weird Halloween update last week. It’s… it’s Madballs themed? Are Madballs still around? They must be, I guess. I had the mummy one when I was young. My dog ate him through a lengthy series of tastes. Anyway, this event sees you trying to take down a Madballs-possessed driver, which is a possibility I had never actually entertained. The Chevy Corvette C8 Stingray and Shelby Daytona feature in some new events, and you can get seven Madballs wraps for your cars. There are a few other things in here, but I’ll let you dig into that if you’re interested.

Card of Darkness, The utterly brilliant Apple Arcade card game Card of Darkness gets its first major update in quite a long time. Maybe ever? I’m not looking again. This new version introduces the Chaos Realm, which gives you a brand new adventure with procedurally-generated dungeons that ramp up in difficulty as the week goes on. The Sunday dungeon is the hardest, so Mondays finally have something going for them. There are new enemies, items, and spells to use in the Chaos Realm so there are bound to be some surprises until you get the hang of things. It’s a great new mode for an awesome game, and in any other week I’d be giving it the coveted UMMSotW award. Unfortunately for Card of Darkness, we’ve got a real over-achiever in the form of Death Road to Canada.

The Seven Deadly Sins, Free Hey-ho, it’s The Seven Deadly Sins. The Devil’s Checklist. (Insert Celebrity and/or Politician You Dislike Here)’s Weekend. The free-to-play mobile game about anime people smacking other anime people upside the noggins with their weapons. And as of this update, yet another home for characters from SNK’s King of Fighters. Four different heroes make the hop over in this collaboration, and the Halloween Holy Knight Gowther slides on in behind them. Some new events related to both of these things are in here, along with the usual balance tweaks, bug fixes, and performance improvements.

Dead Cells, $8.99 The outstanding Dead Cells keeps on rolling with this latest update, which is dubbed the Legacy Update. While this one hit other versions a while ago, it’s new to mobile players. What can you look forward to? New difficulty, new biomes, new enemies, new bosses, new weapons, new skills, new mutations, and the same old rock-solid gameplay that keeps us all coming back for more. This game was a gift that kept on giving even in its original form, so the fact that more content keeps on coming is just a barrage of cherries on top of the sundae. The Bad Seed DLC should be up next for the mobile version, tentatively scheduled for early next year.

That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
