Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for November 28th, 2019. It is Thanksgiving! In America! But I am a Canadian who lives in Japan, so here I am. I am using it as an excuse to give you a somewhat truncated SwitchArcade experience today. We’re going straight to the new releases, and after that? I certainly didn’t write out 600 sales, but I think you’ll be happy with the substitute. Let’s slide on in!
New Releases
Electronic Super Joy ($15.00)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
This is an ultra-tough platformer in the vein of games like Super Meat Boy and N+. It is a very good game, and this particular version includes all of the extra content that you had to pay more for on PC. Granted, the price is about the same as buying all of that stuff together, but that’s fine. Good tunes, nice visual style, and more than 80 levels of split-second platforming entertainment. If you like this kind of thing, you’ll really like Electronic Super Joy.
Trover Saves the Universe ($29.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
Two things to mention up-front here. First, this game was made by the developer started by Rick & Morty creator Justin Roiland, and he did indeed have input on it. You’ll be able to tell pretty quickly, as his sense of humor permeates the experience. Second, this was originally a VR game. You’ll also be able to spot that pretty fast, as you play the game as a chair-bound character holding a controller who directs another character around. It’s not as good without the VR aspect, but it’s still good enough. Add extra points if you like Rick & Morty. It’s only about six or seven hours long, but that feels about right for what it’s laying down.
TheNightfall ($39.99)
That’s how the title is spelled. No space. Sorry. This is a pretty poor horror game that is inexplicably double the price on Switch when compared to the PC version. Well, right now that version is on sale so it’s actually more like four times the price. It’s not worth the Switch price. It’s not worth the normal PC price. It is also not worth the PC sale price. The story is bad, the gameplay is dull, the scares are weak, and it’s just janky all around. Forty dollars. Unbelievable.
Professional Farmer: American Dream ($39.99)
Hmm. Is this really the American dream? Doing some seriously mundane work to slowly accumulate enough money to possibly survive your retirement barring any overly-expensive medical issues? Wait, I’ve just been handed a paper. It seems this is, in fact, the American Dream. Apparently this game exclusively has pumpkin farming, so if you see any other games that have pumpkin farming? Unauthorized. Illegal. Going to prison. Call your local police station if you see it. Feel that sweet American Dream coming true as you farm pumpkins in this game and no other. This costs four dollars on Steam right now. Forty dollars here. Yes, this is the same publisher as the above game. And that’s how you achieve the American dream, my friends.
Amazing Brick Breaker ($4.99)
This is another game that takes after BBtan, and it has considerably fewer fresh ideas than the last one. Throw a bunch of balls at blocks that take a lot of hits to remove. Aim carefully and strategically to avoid getting crushed. It has local multiplayer support and is pretty cheap, I suppose. Half the price of Holedown, and about half as good. But if you want to break some colorful bricks with a stream of balls, I suppose there are only so many ways to do that on Switch.
Skelittle: A Giant Party! ($9.99)
A party game for up to four players locally, Skelittle gives you 15 different mini-games and an interesting sandbox mode where you can combine items you unlock to make your own fun. Which you will probably have to, because 15 mini-games is going to run dry pretty quickly. I suppose for ten dollars you can’t expect too much, but I can’t see any reality where a person wouldn’t want to spend more to get a lot more content in cases like these.
One-Way Ticket ($6.99)
This is a visual novel that claims to be based around real events. A bunch of people get on board a long-distance fishing boat and it all seems pretty cool until crew members start turning up dead. Hm. Is this really based on real events, or is it Gilligan’s Island? The only way to tell is to pick the game up, which I’m not sure I’d recommend. But if you do pick it up, it will only cost seven bucks. That’s pretty cheap for a visual novel no matter how you slice it.
Decay of Logos ($19.99)
This is an action-adventure game with high hopes that bites the dust pretty darned hard. Like, I wish it were good because there are a lot of neat things about it, but the game has fundamental design issues, lots of weirdness and bugs across all platforms, and some issues that are unique to this version. I’m not sure any amount of hammering is going to get this game into shape. Probably better to keep your twenty bucks for something better, like a whole bag of tasty Snickers bars.
Nyan Cat: Lost in Space ($9.99)
You may remember this one from the App Store, where it is indeed a free game. It’s an endless runner or sorts, most closely resembling Robot Unicorn Attack but actually not very much like it at all. Take your memetastic cat through space and other environments, gobble up all the food, grab weird power-ups, avoid dynamite, and try not to go mad as the Nyan Cat theme loops in the background. It’s fine. Not sure if it’s ten dollars fine, but it is certainly amusing in a mindless way.
Bowling ($9.99)
An over-priced, threadbare game that looks like something you wouldn’t download for free from the Google Play store? Must be a Sabec game. There are lots of bowling games you can buy on Switch. This should probably be your last choice.
Knowledge Trainer: Trivia ($14.99)
With the official Brain Training on the way, I guess it’s time for some other games to try to get in on its buzz. Thus we get Knowledge Trainer, a game whose presentation would very much like you think it is something more than just a trivia game. But it is just a trivia game. It will not help you train your knowledge about anything except things that barely anyone cares about. Trust me, I know. Anyway, this supports up to four players locally and has more than 6000 questions, so it’s actually a pretty content-rich trivia game. Might be fun if you’ve tapped out the Jack Box packs and are looking for something to enjoy with the family over the holidays.
Kissed by the Baddest Bidder ($24.99)
Look at that title! What an amazing name for a game. Like, I thought Untitled Goose Game was a great title, but Kissed by the Baddest Bidder runs absolute laps around it. As for the game itself? Not so interesting. This is an otome visual novel/dating sim where you get put up for auction and have to choose between the five winning bidders. They are all naughty boys, so be ready for some sassy behavior from these not-so-gentlemen. Which one will you smooch? I cannot make that decision for you.
Family Tennis SP ($6.99)
Another in this line of simple sports games from Arc System Works. This time around, it’s tennis. Fortunately, it’s very hard to mess up a tennis game, and this one is fine. Nothing special, but you don’t pay seven bucks for special very often. You can play locally with up to four players, and there are a few different modes to play in. Multiple difficulty settings and a few mini-games round out the package, such as it is.
Indie Gems Bundle – Explosions Edition ($29.99)
This is a bundle of three indie games from publisher Plug-In Digital. You get Steredenn: Binary Stars, NeuroVoider, and Transcripted at a slight discount from what you would pay for all three games normally. A five dollar discount, to be exact. But uh, it’s not a very good deal at the moment because all three of these games are on sale right now and can be picked up for $13.50. Kind of… kind of poor timing really? Steredenn‘s doing a lot of the heavy lifting in this bundle, but the other two games are decent enough.
Sales
