It’s hard to believe that it’s been five years since Hipster Whale released Crossy Road, a game that took the classic Frogger gameplay and modernized it for a mobile gaming audience and also pioneered an extremely friendly free to play monetization system that has been utilized by hundreds of other games since. It also popularized the Verby Noun naming trend, which has also been utilized by hundreds of other games. Now the developer is back with a new Crossy Road game that is destined for Apple Arcade. It’s called Crossy Road Castle, and instead of an isometric one-hop-at-a-time adventure it takes the 2D platforming genre and, well, Crossy Road-ifies it with randomly generated levels and a cast of adorable voxel characters. Here’s a trailer.
In an interview over at Gamespot, a few more features and screenshots are divulged for Crossy Road Castle. One of the most interesting ones to me is that the game will feature local multiplayer for up to 4 players and can utilize a variety of devices to get everyone in the game. That means that any combination of iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, iOS 13 compatible controller, or even Mac or Apple TV devices can allow players to join up for some Crossy Road Castle fun. The game’s rooms are also generated based on how many people are playing, so that when you have multiple players certain puzzles may require cooperation but when you’re playing alone you should only see levels that can be beaten solo. No word on exactly when Crossy Road Castle will be arriving for Apple Arcade but we’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for this one.
