Welcome to the SwitchArcade Roundup for June 27th! A few new releases the last couple of days, some sales coming and going, and some interesting game announcements to be had. Switch life is never truly boring, that’s for sure. I feel like this month was slower than May, but we do have Wolfenstein and Crash Bandicoot to liven up the end of the month, too. I’m really curious for that Crash trilogy, because I want to see if those games live up to my memories. Or in the case of the original Crash Bandicoot, if it’s as bad as I remember it being. I do have memories of buying that one at Best Buy when it was a Greatest Hit, with the gaudy green packaging. But it never quite stuck with me, especially after the next two games improved on all the promise from the original to such a degree. But do those games hold up well? I’m curious to find out on Friday! Nintendo now has Mario, Sonic, and Crash on one system. They…won the console wars of the 1990s, I guess?

Nintendo Labo support for Mario Kart 8
Did you pick up Nintendo Labo? Did you make the Labo motorbike accessory? Well, now you can use that in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to drive your jalopy and use your items. It’s a pretty cool use of Labo, and I’d love to see other games try to take advantage of Labo accessories.
Pato Box coming to Switch on July 9th
Have you ever wanted to be a boxing duck? Well, now’s your chance, as Pato Box launches on Switch in a couple of weeks. The game’s inspired by Punch-Out and features both story and arcade modes, along with motion control support. I had fun with this one at PAX South, definitely interested in checking out more of it.
Fortnite updates
- Playground LTM is live today, which lets you mess around with the island with your squad in a sandbox mode.
- Version 4.5 should improve Switch performance, though some people are seeing issues.
- Season 5 of the Battle Pass begins on July 12th at 4 AM EDT, and a double XP weekend happens from July 29th to July 2nd.
- Sony’s CEO says they’re “looking at a lot of the possibilities" regarding cross-platform support for Fortnite. And they say that they’re taking “supporting our business" into consideration. This seems pretty simple: let people do cross-platform sync, people will live with the cross-platform multiplayer restrictions. Or maybe when season 5 rolls around, and people decide to jump to a new account to play on the Switch and Xbox instead of being locked to PS4, it’ll hurt your business?
Super Bomberman R gets David Hayter-voiced Snake in new characters
So yeah, whatever beef caused David Hayter to no longer play Snake was clearly caused by Hideo Kojima. Because not only is David Hayter playing Snake in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he’s also voicing Solid Snake and Naked Snake in a new Super Bomberman R update, which also adds in some other Konami and Hudson characters, along with wrestler Xavier Woods. This one just went multiplatform after being exclusive to the Switch, but it’s refreshing to see the game continue to get new content months after release, and for free, too!
New Releases
Lumines Remastered ($14.99)
The rhythmic puzzle game, which saw a revival on mobile in 2016, now gets a console revival as well. Reports suggest that the HD Rumble on this is incredibly intense, which sounds perfect for this game. Next up: Rez for Switch. I’d definitely recommend picking up Lumines on the Switch, because it definitely takes me back to the days of the PSP.
Air Mail ($14.99, $13.49 launch sale)
N-Fusion revives its 2012 mobile game about taking dangerous flights in a fantasy world to deliver mail. The game looked great in 2012, and still shines in 2018. Realism fades, style is forever. I’m curious to see if this does well on Switch, because there are a ton of great mobile games from this era that would shine on the Switch for sure.
Paranautical Activity ($7.99)
Fast-paced, roguelike-inspired first-person shooter action comes to the Switch. Beyond the game’s infamy, it’s a pretty fun take on the roguelike FPS genre, and should provide you great replayability if you can manage its challenge.
Cubikolor ($8.99)
This puzzler has you controlling a multi-color cube…er, Kube, and trying to navigate three-dimensional levels (including time travel?!) to try and survive and solve each level. Hmm!
Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana ($59.99)
You know, the Ys series is one I’ve always meant to get into, because of praise from people like Shaun, and intrigue over its bump combat system. Though, later games like this one seem to be a bit more normal as far as combat goes. You have multiple characters to play as in this real-time action-RPG. It’s been pretty well-regarded in its multiple releases since the original Vita version, though some issues aren’t going to be fixed until the coming weeks.
de Blob ($29.99)
The 2008 puzzle-platformer where you go around painting and splatting stuff sees a revival on Switch in 2018. Seems appropriate what with Splatoon going around and being all popular and junk. You have to go around and paint the town a bunch of different colors, collecting paint and mixing colors to accomplish your objectives. The sequel should be coming this year as well.
Angels of Death ($14.99)
So this apparently started out as an RPG Maker freeware game in Japan, and exploded in popularity to become a manga, forthcoming anime, and now a console game? A 13 year-old girl wakes up in a strange sealed building, and works with a strange, bandaged man, to try and escape. I’m going to take a guess that things get weird and dark from there.
