‘Final Fantasy’ Fans, Rejoice: ‘Final Fantasy Tactics’ Has Been Updated with 64-Bit Compatibility

TouchArcade Rating:

As iOS 11 looms and the deadline for 32-bit apps is upon us, it’s been interesting watching long-dormant apps finally get updated after years of inactivity. Still, some big names remain unaccounted for, while others have promised updates on a nebulous schedule. One game that had many iOS gamers worried was Square Enix’s Final Fantasy Tactics ($13.99), the only iOS Final Fantasy game that wasn’t yet 64-bit compatible. Fortunately, about a month ago Square made it known that the game would be updated sometime in September. Dates have a way of slipping, but this one didn’t. Final Fantasy Tactics has at long last been updated and will happily make a home on your spiffy new iOS 11 devices.

The update comes at a slight cost, however. The developers were unable to get the in-battle quick save feature working, so you won’t be able to save mid-battle anymore. Also, any quick-save and cloud saves from the previous version are not compatible with this version, so you might want to duck in and make a hard save of your file before you update. Losing the mid-battle saves is a bit of a loss in my opinion, but if that’s the cost of keeping the game going, so be it. Final Fantasy Tactics is a legendary game and the iOS platform would be poorer for its loss.

While there are still many great games that need to be updated if they’re going to survive into the future, it’s good to see that Square Enix isn’t ready to abandon Final Fantasy Tactics yet. Perhaps we can even look forward to that mid-battle save being added back in at some point now that the code is back in play. If not, at least we’ve still got the game itself. Now, which 32-bit app will be the next to pop up in the updates tab?

The graphics are outdated but when they updated the game with better character models and set pieces etc I surely would buy it.

I still love this game! It's great fun on my iPad and has tremendous replay value imho. Was very stoked to see it get some 64bit love!

      Memories...
I played this on my iPod touch, and even with that tiny screen it sucked me in with its atmosphere.

An iPod touch 2G was the only device I had when developing the game, so I guess you could say it was tailor-made for it :) I still love that curved back!

Not sure what to say after such nice words! I couldn't bear to let Aftermath disappear with iOS 11 but I sure didn't expect anyone to notice that I'd even updated it. It felt a bit like archeology to be looking at code I wrote 8 years ago! There's a lot of things I would do differently if I were making the game now, but there are things that stand up and all in all I'm still really proud of having made the whole thing from scratch (apart from audio) myself back in the pre-Unity days.
I would have been happy just saving Aftermath from the 'Appocalypse', but it's so nice that TA ran this, thanks Jared! When the game first came out I had no idea what I was doing, didn't have a marketing plan or anything, and people on the TA forums noticed it, picked it up and pretty much single-handedly propelled it up the chart. So it feels like a warm homecoming for Aftermath to feature in these pages again after all this time. :)
