Watch the ‘Crashlands’ Postmortem Free From the GDC Vault

TouchArcade Rating:

One of the cool things about GDC is that many if not all of the talks are recorded, and made available in the GDC Vault for those who attended. However, some talks are uploaded to the Vault for free, so that anyone can watch. And a talk that is particularly relevant here has been uploaded: Butterscotch Shenanigans talking about the development of Crashlands ($6.99), and in particular the cancer ordeal that Sam Coster went through while making the game. It’s called a postmortem, which seems particularly ironic here because Sam Coster is still alive! You can watch it here.

You might have read Sam’s story on TouchArcade, or seen the documentary on Dev Diary, but regardless, there’s some new insights, and the new postmortem perspective of the game, a year after its release, to take in here. Some relevant ones include a Pokemon GO (Free) talk from Niantic’s Dennis Hwang on the UX and visual design of the game; a talk on the adaptation from physical to digital for the upcoming Duelyst; and a talk on [using game mechanics to elevate the narrative] for the just-released-on-iOS adventure Oxenfree ($4.99).

Was hoping for an update to the Pro line. I guess they won't get my money right now, after all.

      1. Blucard

They're saving it for the fall because of it being bezel-less, but the iPhone has to show it off first.

Here I was hoping for an upgrade to the mini, oh well I bought a switch anyways I just wanted it for gaming anyways... Switch will be a lot better for that and cheaper hardware (more expensive games but yeah way better games.

      1. Petr Dvořák

Yeah I was waiting for iPad Pro 2 or Mini Pro but because there is no such device on a horizon I'll take Switch. Glad to have you Nintendo ;-)

Is A8X to A9 really an upgrade for gaming purposes?

      1. Milotorou

        not really IMO.

This new tablet is good if you have something below the original Air, IMO if you have an Air or Air 2 you can stick with it.

        1. jakeopp

Oh I wasn't thinking about upgrading, pretty pointless when my Air 2 does everything I need. Just curious what exactly Apple was trying to do here

          1. TigerMoth

This is the iPad equivalent of the iPhone SE. Meant for budget-minded folks who may otherwise go for Android. Not what I was looking for, but I can see why they did it.

      2. Rob Funnell

Like it technically is, but by no means worth upgrading solely for gaming. Seems more like a cheap alternative to iPad Air 2 rather than its implicit sequel

    4. dancj

Interesting. I had assumed that "pro" was just the new name for "air" and the 9.8" iPad Pro was the successor to the iPad Air 2.

I doubt it'll make a difference to me. My iPad Air 2 is still plenty fast enough. When I do upgrade it'll probably be to the current pro model to get the most longevity out of it.

      1. houseofg

Yep, sounds like a great plan, and one I will probably follow as well. No desire to move out of my Air 2 anytime soon.

      Apple Announces

      1. cowtruck123

Yeah this site doesn't really do the proofreading thing 😂

        1. houseofg

          Either is correct.

          1. Mr_ C_

Either could be justified as grammatically correct since a company is both a single entity (one company) and simultaneously many people.

            But announces sounds much better.

      2. dancj

Company names can be treated as plural or singular. It's pretty much a stylistic choice.

      3. Shaun Musgrave

Rob is from the UK, where it's far more common to treat companies as plural nouns. Those of us on staff who aren't Americans try to be careful about this kind of thing, as people like to make theatre of any perceived deviations from their local flavour. But sometimes in the heat of the moment, poor connexions are made and things slip thru. So-rry aboot that!

        1. dancj

Don't apologise for not fixing something that wasn't wrong. In these days of the Internet allowing people to communicate across the world there's no need to always stick to the American way of writing things.

          1. Shaun Musgrave

I was playing on a Canadian stereotype. :)

    6. Ron

Red and black would have made me want one. Red and white...no.

    7. chamillion205

Does it come in higher storage capacity?

      1. JosephWelke

        Yes, 128GB.

    8. chamillion205

Ahhhh nvm I have an air 2. I think I'll just go with my first mind and upgrade to the pro line when I do decide to upgrade

    9. AlpacaLips

I'm confused. I already own an iPad mini 4 with 128 GB.

      1. JosephWelke

Yeah, but now it's all they make for the Mini 4 and it's had a price drop since you bought it.

    10. HelperMonkey

I'd been considering upgrading my Mini 2 to an Air 2. For someone like me, this is appealing. A major speed increase from what I had, but quite reasonably priced.

      1. JosephWelke

Same situation I'm in, especially since 32GB is quite enough for my needs.

    11. ImJPaul

Why would they give the Red iPhone a white front? This screams black front.

      1. JosephWelke

Wow, I'm replying a lot... but I think it has something to do with real apples. You bite into a red apple, it's white inside, so the same for the iPhone.

    12. Petr Dvořák

Low end with old dual core CPU, very sad.

      1. JosephWelke

        A year is old? Ok.

What I want to know is: how much RAM does it have?
