After many months in soft launch, Creature Quest (Free) has finally released worldwide. If the name isn’t ringing any bells, I’m not surprised. What you should know, though, is that this game was developed by Jon Van Caneghem, the creator and designer of the venerable Might and Magic and Heroes of Might and Magic game series, both classic strategy games that I would consider among the most influential of the genre. However, don’t get too excited because Creature Quest is a very different beast than those ones, though that doesn’t mean it isn’t an interesting game in its own right. Yet, it’s F2P, and that will definitely scare many of you away.
Should you give Creature Quest a chance, though? I think the best way to answer that question is watching the video above. We got to see the creator himself play the game at GDC 2016, and you can see there’s a ton of strategy going on. At its core, Creature Quest is a monster collecting and upgrading game (not unlike Heroes of Might and Magic in a way), but there are plenty of interesting ideas here.
For instance, you can apparently build your own dungeon and earn rewards by defeating your rivals in PvP, but you can also just play PvE. While the F2P part of the game will definitely put a dent in most players’ enthusiasm, hopefully there’s enough there to make it worth the time investment.
