Gameloft’s behind-the-back runner/crawler/swinger featuring everyone’s favorite webhead has been going strong for a few years now, tossing a veritable cornucopia of Spider-Mans and their Amazing Friends into the game on a regular basis. That said, it’s been a while since the development team has added any content to the game’s story mode, which ended on a cliffhanger with hints that someone else was behind Mysterio’s cross-dimensional power play. Another bummer is that the cool 2099 environment from the Spider-Verse event has been MIA since that story came to a close. Well, face front, True Believers, because the latest update of Spider-Man Unlimited (Free) sees both of those long-gone elements make a comeback.
The biggest news is the addition of a whole new issue to the story mode, with 40 new levels ready for your crawler assault. Even more spectacular still? The entire new issue is set in Nueva York of 2099, which means that sweet level is back with a vengeance. Since we’re in 2099, we can look forward to meeting at least one of Miguel O’Hara’s foes, the deadly Goblin 2099. And of course, there are new Spideys to collect, including Spider-Man 2099’s new threads from the latest volume of the comics, the spurned android Flipside, and Miguel’s older half-brother, Venom 2099. Those two aren’t, uh, usually depicted as being heroes, but hey, we’ll take what we can get.
All in all, it’s good news for fans of Spider-Man Unlimited and Marvel’s not-as-futuristic-as-it-used-to-be 2099 imprint. The update is available now, though not all of the content is available just yet. It’s hard to say if these additions will appease the fans, but they’ll probably go over better than the cartoon pig infestation that came from my monkey’s paw wish for Spider-Ham, at least.
