Crossy Road (Free) took the core gameplay mechanic of Frogger and made it voxel-ized and endless. It was an absurdly successful formula, and for the past year and a half we’ve seen a zillion games that have tried to take that formula and add their own unique twist to it. Meanwhile, others took similar classic game concepts and tried to Crossy Road-ify them in a similar way. Last year Down The Mountain (Free) took the core mechanic of the classic arcade game Q-bert and Crossy Road-ified it, and while it didn’t quite get as popular as Crossy Road did I think it was another winning formula. Now developer Tastypill and Bulkypix are trying their hand at an endless Q-bert and are hoping to stand out from the pack with their sharp pixel art, a space theme, and more action-oriented gameplay. Check out the trailer for their upcoming Mars Mountain.
With Crossy Road inspiring so many similar games it’s tough to get excited for a new one unless it’s really doing something unique. There hasn’t been as many endless Q-bert games released, but again I really hope for something that’s truly different from what’s already out there. I have a feeling Mars Mountain might be poised to achieve that. We’ll all get to find out together next week when Mars Mountain hits the App Store for both iOS and Android on April 14th.
