A strategy game that’s fast-paced, easy to pick up but with a good amount of complexity, and strongly echoes its board game roots? Tell me more. Heroes of Normandie, an iPad and PC game coming soon from strategy overlords, Slitherine, first saw the light of day as a board game that attempted to turn Hollywood-film bombast into a board game about WWII. Heroes of Normandie has three different armies and three campaigns and boasts a system that lets you bluff your way to victory since there are more units on the board than available moves, so your opponent never knows what you’ll decide to do next. Developer Iello built Heroes of Normandie more like a game system than a single game and have already developed more campaigns for the game, which I’ll talk about in a bit. As you can see from the trailer below, the game really kept its board game feel in the transition to digital, always a plus in my book.
The other reason I’m excited about this game is not only because the game looks like it will be a lot of fun but also because of the possibility of future expansions coming to the iPad. For instance, there’s the Shadows Over Normandie expansion that uses the original system to let you set your WWII soldiers against all kinds of monsters, including the ancient Deep Ones. I’ve been waiting for a quick, competitive strategy game to come to the iPad for some time now, and I’m hoping that Heroes of Normandie will do the trick. The PC version is releasing early September, which means that we should probably get the iPad version a couple of months after that. If you enjoy strategy games in the vein of Mark H. Walker’s Lock ‘n Load series or are just looking for a quick, entertaining strategy game, Heroes of Normandie might just do the trick.
