I enjoy waking up to good news, and reading this morning that Fallen London is coming to iOS definitely did the trick. For those who don’t know the browser-based game, it is a masterpiece in story-telling from the creators of Sunless Sea, the PC game that has gone over very well with those who enjoy games with deep, complex stories at their core. Fallen London throws the player in a dark and hilarious Victorian-Gothic version of London and then lets him or her spin tales in a world containing over 12 million words. The stories you weave in this game range from the mundane to the extraordinary to the supernatural, all of them within a perfectly realized world that puts other fantastic worlds to shame. The orininal Fallen London was browser-based, and although it was playable on iOS browsers, it definitely was more of a hassle than a pleasure. I’ve actually asked the developers, Failbetter Games, a couple of times in the past about any iOS plans because I could see that this game would thrive on mobile.
Even though I can’t claim any credit for it, Failbetter has finally decided to help Fallen London creep over to mobile in 2015. The app will sync with your browser, so you can continue exploring Fallen London on both platforms and will offer offline play, which I know is often a core concern of many. The game will also, finally, have music, and it will come from the composer who created the music for Sunless Sea. I’ve always felt that the lack of music in Fallen London really hurt the game’s ambience, so I’m happy Failbetter decided to go the extra step. Failbetter is even talking about bringing Sunless Sea to mobile, which is even more good news for mobile gamers. The game will be F2P, just like the browser version, and if you’ve never played Fallen London, you’re most definitely in for a storytelling treat.
