The idea behind the TouchArcade Game of the Week is that every Friday afternoon we post the one game that came out this week that we think is worth giving a special nod to. Now, before anyone goes over-thinking this, it doesn’t necessarily mean our Game of the Week pick is the highest scoring game in a review, the game with the best graphics, or really any other quantifiable “best" thing. Instead, it’s more just us picking out the single game out of the week’s releases that we think is the most noteworthy, surprising, interesting, or really any other hard to describe quality that makes it worth having if you were just going to pick up one.
These picks might be controversial, and that’s OK. If you disagree with what we’ve chosen, let’s try to use the comments of these articles to have conversations about what game is your game of the week and why.
Without further ado…
Device 6
I’m not sure that I’m capable of describing Simogo’s Device 6 ($3.99), and even if I were, I don’t think that I’d want to. With the visual stylings of a ’60s Bond flick, and an incredible soundtrack accompanying it, Device 6 is an audio/visual treat that’s best experienced completely fresh. Sure you might describe it as a gamebook, or as an interactive novella, or as a puzzle game, or all of those things and more rolled into one. I’m sure you could find some video walkthroughs on YouTube, or pore over the information in our forums, and come away with a better idea of what Device 6 is all about. But don’t. Don’t spoil this for yourself. (Ok, I take that back, Simogo’s own official trailer is safe enough to watch.)
Device 6 is unlike anything else you can play on the App Store, and to really understand its impact, it’s best going in fresh. I understand that this writeup is extremely vague, but all I can really say is trust us on this one. Device 6 is one of the most unique experiences you’ll have on iOS this year, or heck, any year for that matter. If the thought of unlocking a mystery through clever and unconventional means sounds at all interesting to you, just download Device 6 and dive right in. If I’m wrong and you hate it, well, I’ll buy you a beer (or an apple juice, depending on age) next time we run into each other. More than likely though, you’ll thank me for forcing you to experience the game without any preconceived notions. Let it surprise you. Let it fascinate you. Let it disturb you. Let Device 6 blow you away. It will get stuck in your mind long after you’ve completed it, but Device 6 is truly too unique and special not to be our TouchArcade Game of the Week.
