Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for July 13th, 2023. In today’s article, we’ve got a whole bunch of new releases to check out. The best of the bunch include Atelier Marie Remake, Touhou: New World, and Manic Mechanics, but there are lots of different things here to cover a variety of tastes. After summarizing those, we head on over to the lists of new sales and expiring discounts for the day. Let’s get to business!
New Releases
Atelier Marie Remake: The Alchemist of Salburg ($49.99)
There sure are a lot of Atelier games, but the wild thing is that we’ve never had the very first game in the series in English before. Well, we still don’t. But what we do have is this extremely spiffy remake of the game, allowing you to experience the adventure that launched a franchise. You know how this works in general, I’m sure. You’re an alchemist in training, and you need to complete requests by gathering materials and creating items. This game does feature that time limit thing that some people can’t get on with, but you can play without it in the new Unlimited Mode if you like. I’ll have a review of this one soon but so far it’s another winner.
Touhou: New World ($24.99)
Okay, so this is like Touhou mixed with Ys. Specifically, the kind of Ys that we saw in Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys Origin. Since it is a Touhou game you can expect a bit more bullet hell from the bosses, but I think any fan of the aforementioned games will find this downright cozy. I’ll be doing a full review of this one soon, so if you need more details do look forward to that.
Manic Mechanics ($24.99)
I hope I’m not being rude here by comparing this very directly to another game, but this is like Overcooked but applied to car repair. I mean that in a good way. Up to four people can play together either via local multiplayer, local wireless, or online. Tackle twenty-five stages of mayhem, doing maintenance on whatever vehicles come your way. My family and I have been playing this one to prepare for my review, and I think the developers are on to something here.
Gravity Circuit ($21.99)
Wow, this looks really good. It’s clearly an homage to Mega Man X, but with a melee focus that calls to mind Mega Man Zero. You have to battle against eight distinct bosses who wait at the end of each stage, then deal with an additional four stages of action on top of that. You’ll gain new powers as you go, and there are plenty of secrets to find along the way. I haven’t had a chance to play this yet, but it looks incredibly promising.
Chaos Galaxy ($19.99)
Choose from more than a dozen different factions and get to work conquering the galaxy in this strategic simulation game from eastasiasoft. There are tons of different unit types, sixty different commanders, and plenty of unique skills to make use of. Frankly, we don’t see enough games of this sort on the Switch to get too fussy about them. If you’re into galactic strategy games, you’ll almost certainly want to look into this game.
Arcade Archives Raiga: Strato Fighter ($7.99)
Hamster has once again dug deep for an Arcade Archives pick, and that’s not bad at all. Tecmo probably isn’t the first name people think of for horizontal shoot-em-ups, so Raiga is certainly a rarity. This game originally released in 1991, and the main gimmick of the game is that you can turn your ship around to hit enemies coming in from behind you. If nothing else, it’s a shooter that few of you have likely played.
Risky Woods (QUByte Classics) ($9.99)
Originally developed by Dinamic Software and Zeus Software for home computers back in 1992, Risky Woods is a rather decent little side-scrolling platformer. This is the Genesis/Mega Drive version of the game, and for better or worse is similar in terms of features to QUByte’s other classic releases. It reminds me a bit of Ghosts ‘n Goblins, albeit through that usual Amiga-ish filter of gameplay design. I’ll be doing a review of this one, but I’d imagine fans of this well-regarded title are going to be happy just to see it back out there again in any form.
Strike Team Gladius ($9.99)
Oh hey, it’s a Wave Light Games tactical RPG. You know, the Demons’s Rise/Shieldwall Chronicles fellow. This one doesn’t seem to be on mobile, so I can’t say I’ve played it. But I have faith in any game from this developer having a reasonable level of quality, so if you’re looking for a sci-fi take on this genre and don’t mind a few rough edges and a mechanics-driven focus, you might want to consider this one. Reviews over on Steam are certainly encouraging.
Robot VS ($19.80)
Wow, this game doesn’t look all that great. But there’s something about it that is intriguing me. Up to four players can play this one via splitscreen play, and it looks for all the world to me like some sort of spin on SEGA’s Virtual On or some of Bandai Namco’s Gundam games. There are ten different robots to choose from, each with their own stats, and you can have up to nine robots in a battle. It might be a lot of fun, but twenty bucks is a fairly stiff price for a lottery ticket. I recommend waiting for some impressions to come out.
Football Cup 2023 ($9.99)
This is the third in this series of soccer games to hit the Switch, so I have to believe that people are enjoying them well enough. As usual, it’s single-player only so do keep that in mind before you drop your tenner. There are a number of improvements and updates for this year’s version, and honestly speaking at this price it’s an easy upgrade if you’ve had fun with the previous installments. Not my thing, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be yours.
Needy Princess Nerd Club ($19.90)
Buckle up, we’ve got two of these today. In this visual novel, an otaku who hides his nature joins a school club dedicated to his interests. Around the same time, an otaku girl joins the club and while all seems fine at first, she seems to get more and more possessive of the attention of the club members. As always with this company, the localization is horrible. It makes it hard to enjoy what isn’t even a particularly strong story.
Elder Sister’s Love Training ($19.90)
And another from the same publisher, with all the same issues as the others. Don’t count on the text being well-written as the localization is a disaster. The protagonist of this visual novel actually has a girlfriend as the story starts, but he hasn’t been able to kiss her yet after six months of dating. He’s too shy, you see. So his girlfriend suggests that he get some love tips from… her best friend and her mom. Well, okay. I’m not here to judge.
The Bin Bunch
Sacred Zodongga Defense ($14.99)
Car Detailing Simulator ($15.99)
Crafting Block World: Magic Dungeons Adventure ($9.99)
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
The inbox today features a nice array of Ubisoft, Capcom, KEMCO, and a whole lot of indies to choose from. Note that Monster Hunter Rise is hitting an all-time low price, so there’s never been a better time to grab this excellent game on the Switch. The outbox also has quite a bit in it, so I’d recommend checking both lists carefully today. I’m sure we’ll have more to comb through tomorrow.
