SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Circa Infinity’, ‘Destructivator SE’, ‘Super Mombo Quest’, and Today’s Other Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for November 5th, 2021. In today’s article, we go through the rest of the releases of the week. We’ve got summaries of all of them, which are not reviews. Please remember that. We’ve also got a pretty hefty number of new sales to check out, and we’re going to do just that. The expiring sales, too. There is plenty to look at today, so let’s get going!

New Releases

Circa Infinity ($9.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Kenny Sun! Kenny Sun! KENNY SUN! One of my favorite mobile developers sees one of his coolest games hit the Switch with this release of Circa Infinity. You need to descend into nested circles while avoiding the hazards that threaten to end you. There are fifty stages in total, and it takes a lot of concentration and skill to get through all of them. In true Kenny Sun fashion, there is a lot going on visually here. Not recommended to those who are photosensitive, but if you don’t fall into that group and enjoy arcade-style action, give this a look.

The Gardener and the Wild Vines ($9.99)

This is a very creative puzzle-platformer where you play as a gardener who needs to ascend towers to save the missing prince. It does that usual tower game thing where the tower rotates, but your means of climbing is most unusual. You need to jump and slash at the flowers growing on the vines to propel yourself, hopefully towards the next flower or safe perch. The vines that the flowers sprout from grow in unpredictable ways, so you need to think quickly. There are twenty-eight levels to play through in order to rescue the gardener’s beloved prince, with challenge mode variants of each level to keep the good times rolling after you’ve finished the story. Inventive and fun. That’s a nice combination.

The Prince of Landis ($7.99)

A normal kid living in a backwater town in 1980s Oregon has an abnormal encounter with a visitor from another planet. Up until now, Evan’s had a pretty tough go of things. He’s bullied at school and things are generally quite bleak for him. His new “friend" might be able to help him with his problems, but at what cost? This is a horror adventure, so don’t be fooled by the somewhat innocent exterior.

Fast & Furious: Spy Racers Rise of SH1FT3R ($39.99)

This racer, based on the Netflix CG animated series spin-off of the movie series, features seventeen tracks, five locations, thirteen different racers, and both local and online multiplayer support. Up to four players can take the track and compete against each other. If you’re flying solo, there’s a single-player campaign that tells the story of you trying to stop the criminal organization SH1FT3R from carrying out their evil plans. You do this by winning a racing tournament, because this is a racing game. This one is developed by the same folks who were behind the surprisingly solid All-Star Fruit Racing. Hopefully they can carry that quality forward to this game.

Encodya ($29.99)

Well, this sure looks nice. It’s a point-and-click style adventure game about a kid and her robot guardian living in the year 2062. I just wish the rest of the game lived up to the rather spiffy visuals. I have some issues with how the story is told, particularly with how heavy-handed it can be at times. The puzzles are okay but not much better than that. It just doesn’t seem to reach its potential in most ways. It’s not terrible, but I do think the initial impression and price tag write a cheque that the game as a whole can’t cash.

Stilstand ($2.99)

Stilstand is a brief visual novel-style game about a woman grappling with her insecurities, and the shadow monster that lives in her apartment. The unique presentation, solid writing, and affordable price make this a journey worth taking if you feel like digging into a story. Not much more I can say without spoiling it, so I’ll leave it there.

Pixel Heroes: Mega Byte & Magic ($14.99)

This is an enjoyable little roguelite that is probably a little too random for its own good at times, but I suspect many of you will have fun with it anyway. You gather up your party from what ultimately ends up being thirty-three different hero classes, and then head out into one of seventeen linear dungeons. The aim is to try to make it through all of the battles and events along the way and topple the boss without things going too ca-ca. There are four campaigns to tackle and an endless arena battle mode to give you a little extra to squeeze out of the game. Just be aware that permadeath is real and comes often, sometimes with very little warning.

Destructivator SE ($4.99)

There’s a certain feel to most of the Thalamus Digital releases, with many of them serving as deliberate throwbacks to classic computer games. At least as far as I can tell, Destructivator doesn’t seem to have one particular game in mind, but the action here is certainly fast and furious the way some vintage action games could be. Make your way through more than fifty stages that aren’t afraid to pull out all the stops to see you dead. Battle enemies, mini-bosses, and bosses, all while wearing a lime green suit. Jack enemy ships and use them to rain a little fire of your own. Tough, but enjoyable.

Om Nom: Run ($4.99)

Cut the Rope was a really clever game with some unique mechanics that helped it stand out in a crowded marketplace. The main character of that game has been spun out into other less unique things, and this is one of them. It’s a behind the back runner, like the kind Eli parodied several years ago. You can get different outfits and characters, play a mission-based campaign mode, head into the more standard endless free run, and engage in some multiplayer for up to eight players. It’s well-made enough for what it is, and I suppose the price is fair for what you get.

Emergency Driver Simulator ($13.99)

Here’s this week’s driving game. It uses that extremely familiar engine, and applies it to emergency vehicles. Police cars, fire engines, and so on. There are 15 different vehicles, lots of missions to clear, and a city full of traffic to cruise around in. It’s a little more expensive than we have typically seen with these kinds of games, but I suppose inflation can always be counted upon.

Super Mombo Quest ($15.90)

That price tag is weird and is going to make for unpleasant calculations when the game goes on sale, but setting that aside, Super Mombo Quest is a pretty cool platformer. You control Mombo, an odd creature that can take a variety of forms with an assortment of abilities. The King of Nightmares threatens to destroy the world of Subrosa, and Mombo has to stop him. Travel through a decent-sized interconnected world, earn upgrades, battle bosses, and do all that Metroidvania-lite stuff we see so often in games these days. Not bad at all.

Spacetime Odissey ($5.99)

I feel like Pix Arts is just trying to annoy me at this point. The asinine spelling in the title, a game clearly cobbled together from a shopping cart full of Unity Asset Store goods, and an X-Wing with the serial numbers filed off. I sure wouldn’t buy this, but clearly enough people are to keep Mr. Vanasse coming back.

Air Stunt Racing ($5.99)

Remember Tuesday? I sure do. That was a fun day. Anyway, on Tuesday of this week, Benjamin Kistler released a template flip named Air Racers. Pix Arts/Benoit Vanasse finishes off our week with… the exact same game under a different name. Like, go back and check the screenshot. Same UI, same plane even. Pix Arts is charging an extra dollar because why the heck not? Nothing matters, might as well grab that extra Snickers bar. Not like either Benoit or Benjamin have a shred of dignity at this point. Anyway, this is still a garbage game. It’s just more expensive this time.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

I don’t know why, but I expected the list of new sales to be bigger than it is. It’s still large, of course. There are a few uncommon pulls I want to highlight. Rush Rally Origins and Rush Rally 3 are both great racers with different things to offer. Kuukiyomi 3 is as hilarious and enjoyable as the rest of that series, and is well worth grabbing. The weekend outbox is a little bigger than usual, with games like Alex Kidd in Miracle World DX, Hatsune Miku Logic Paint S, and Secret Files 3 finishing up their discounts soon. Check those lists yourselves, naturally. Lots of great ways to spend money if you’ve a mind to.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. We’ll be back next week as November starts to heat up. Blue Reflection: Second Light, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Grand Theft Auto – The Trilogy, and Shin Megami Tensei V are the heavy hitters, but there’s surely plenty of other cool stuff that will crop up between those tent-poles. I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
