For several years, as the popularity of MegaCrit’s roguelike deck-building game Slay the Spire grew amongst PC gamers, lots and lots of mobile gamers hoped that the game would one day arrive on their mobile devices, where it seemed like a natural fit. To fill the void of Slay the Spire not being on mobile, a number of developers released their own mobile games that were heavily inspired by MegaCrit’s masterpiece, but with their own unique twists and built specifically with mobile in mind. Games like Night of the Full Moon, Silent Abyss, Pirates Outlaws, and plenty more. Fans of “Spire-likes" were eating quite well on mobile, but then in June of last year, at LONG last, MegaCrit and Humble released the actual Slay the Spire on mobile. Throw the Spire-likes away, they said, because the real deal was finally here!
Well, not exactly. The mobile version of Slay the Spire was lacking in a number of areas. Gameplay was not one of them, because the excellent deck-building strategy game we all knew and loved remained intact. The problem was that it didn’t feel very mobile-friendly in terms of UI and general playability. This was especially true because so many of the Spire-likes that had sprung up in previous years nailed those aspects so well. So now we live in a strange time where yes, Slay the Spire is officially on mobile and even despite its quirks it’s still pretty much the king of the genre it basically created. However, there’s still room in my book for more Spire-likes geared for mobile and with unique takes on the formula, and all this was just a very long-winded way of introducing a new game called Indies’ Lies from developer Func Games and publisher Playbest. How about I just shut up for a minute and you can check out its awesome trailer.
One of the big goals of the developers with Indies’ Lies is to make a roguelike deck builder that’s more accessible to newcomers to the genre but without sacrificing the depth and strategy that is at the core of games like this. They’re also leaning heavily into RPG elements with 9 playable characters that each have unique storylines and settings, and it all takes place in “a mythical world caught between old and new gods." It all sounds very cool, and we’ll be able to find out whether that is indeed the case or not soon as Indies’ Lies is set to launch on iOS and Android next Thursday, September 23rd. Following its mobile launch a PC version will release in December. You can pre-order the iOS version on the App Store here, or pre-register for the Android version on Google Play here, and PC players can Wishlist the game on Steam right here. I’m very much looking forward to getting my hands on Indies’ Lies one week from today.
