SwitchArcade Round-Up: Bluetooth Audio Support, ‘Flynn: Son of Crimson’ and Today’s New Releases, Plus the Latest Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 15th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got a couple of bits of news to go over before we head into the new releases of the day. There are a handful of games to look at today, with the most promising of the lot being the rather pretty Flynn: Son of Crimson. We round things out with the ever-present lists of new and expiring sales, as is our custom. Let’s crack our knuckles and get to business!

The Latest Switch Firmware Update Adds Support for Bluetooth Audio

Nintendo dropped a new firmware update out of the sky last night, and it adds a feature I know some people have been asking for pretty much since the system launched: Bluetooth audio device support. That’s the headliner of the new 13.0.0 firmware, but it also adds a feature to update LAN port-equipped Switch docks like the one that comes with the OLED Model, an option to maintain the Internet connection in Sleep Mode for systems with wired connections, a new method for beginning control stick calibration, and a way to check if your wireless internet is using the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz frequency band. So yeah, not a whole lot of note beyond the Bluetooth audio support unless you’re sporting an OLED Model.

Get an Assist in the Next ‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Event

Who doesn’t like a little helping hand now and then? In the Super Smash Bros. series, Assist Trophies have been a nice way to bring in characters that couldn’t make it into the main roster. They’re also a fun gameplay gimmick. This weekend’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event celebrates those Assist Trophies, with a tournament that will run for three days starting on Friday. Assist Trophies will appear during the event, and the more wins you rack up the better the rewards you’ll receive. Now, observe the Nintendog and feel the feelings of cuteness. Do it.

New Releases

Flynn: Son of Crimson ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

Ooh, that’s some nice pixel art. This is a level-based 2D platformer with a big floofy dog you can ride. As you make your way through the game, you’ll gain access to new attacks and powers. It looks rather nice and the only impressions of it I’ve found so far are quite positive, so I’m giving it the highlight treatment even though I haven’t been able to play it yet myself. The only caveat is that this game is apparently about five or six hours long, and I’ve been informed that many people these days consider that to be too short or some nonsense. Personally, I think that’s a good length for a platformer, but I know some folks think differently.

Between Time: Escape Room ($9.99)

It’s an escape room game with a time travel theme. You get five different locations set across various time periods, which is as good a gimmick as any. The visuals look fairly sharp, but that’s really all I can say is noteworthy about this. Some people can’t get enough of escape room puzzles, and if that’s you then maybe this will be to your liking.

Mindcell ($5.00)

I know it’s not fair, but I get very suspicious of games that look way too good to be five dollars. It makes me wonder where the savings were made, if you know what I mean. This is a third-person action-adventure game with a cyberpunk setting, and apart from its decent graphics it seems to be rather generic. This originally released on mobile last year, where you can still pick it up for a buck. Buttons might make it better, but I leave that up to you.

Titan Chaser ($4.99)

This one is odd. You drive your car around at night and need to find the giants wandering around, then use a light to chase them away from the town. But you don’t have to? You can just drive around in the foggy night weather and chill out. Those titans aren’t going to go anywhere, after all. No damage, no health, no fuel, no resource management. Just… drive around your car and shine your light at stuff. Eh, it’s a thing.

Catlateral Damage: Remeowstered ($14.99)

If you’ve ever wanted to be an annoying cat, this will give you a taste of the experience. You are a house cat. Run around the house and do cat things like damaging the furniture, knocking stuff over, taking a nap in weird places, and randomly meowing. It’s not the deepest of things, but it delivers on the gimmick it promises. This Remeowstered edition overhauls the structure of the game and makes a bunch of improvements to the presentation and UI. Basically shinier with more stuff to do. Still probably best left to cat lovers who are looking for something to fire up now and then to enjoy life with the shoe on the other paw.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Compared to yesterday, there are a lot fewer amazing SEGA sales to look at today. That’s sad. But there are some good games in the list anyway, like Tin Man’s superb Choices That Matter adventures. The outbox has a lot of good games in it, but for the most part they are games we see in these lists often enough that you probably don’t have to stress about grabbing them now unless you really want to play them today or something. Check both of the lists like your lives depend on it, friends. You never know. The game you buy today just might be the game that saves the world. Probably not. But maybe! Universe of possibilities and all that stuff.
