SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Bear’s Restaurant’, ‘Cross the Moon’, ‘Dunk Lords’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for June 18th, 2021. In today’s article, we’ve got summaries of all of today’s new releases. It’s not exactly a bumper crop, but there are a few interesting games to consider. We’ve also got some sales to look at today, which is normal for a Friday. However, since most of the really good games already went on sale a couple of days ago, it’s a somewhat unusual batch. Let’s get to things, shall we?

New Releases

Bear’s Restaurant ($12.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

This is an adventure game about a rather unique restaurant where the dead come to have their last meal. You are Cat, the assistant to Bear. Your job is to dive into the minds of customers and search through their memories to find out about the things they liked when they were alive. But who exactly are you, and where did you come from? Mysteries abound in this unique space. This Switch version includes a new Epilogue episode that tells a bit about what happens after the events of the game. This is a very interesting game, but it’s emotionally exhausting so be prepared for that if you’re looking to pick it up.

Cannon Army ($3.99)

Pix Arts has another game for us, and as with many of its releases I feel like it’s using things it doesn’t have the rights for. Well, whatever. This is an incredibly simple top-down shooter that wishes it was Commando. There are four soldiers to pick from, some power-ups and goodies to pick up, and an endless number of stages to play through. I’m particularly fond of this phrase from the game description: “use wisely you riffle“. Even though it’s just four dollars, I encourage you all to use wisely you monnney and buy some tasty Snickers bars instead.

Cross the Moon ($4.99)

Cross the Moon is a visual novel with occult themes. A mysterious death sparks off the story, pulling in a pair of sibling vampires, a police inspector, and an assortment of other unusual characters. No choices to make in this one, just a nice lengthy read. You’re constantly shifting between three different main characters, and it’s all tied together by a framing device with an unidentified narrator and listener. The bold art style helps this one stand out, if nothing else. For five dollars, those interested in the theme don’t have a lot to lose on this game.

Puzzle Pipes ($7.99)

It’s extremely likely you’ve seen this kind of thing before in other games. Goop will flow, and you need to place pipe pieces to connect two points to keep it from spilling over. Oh no, I’m already out of things to say about this. No wait, here’s something more. You can only play this game in handheld mode. Presumably that is because it requires touch controls. No indication on how many levels you get, but the game description touts three different difficulty levels and a variety of themes.

Arcade Space Shooter 2 in 1 ($3.99)

You know the score with QUByte’s games by now. They’re dirt-cheap, and sometimes they’re pretty good. This one gives you two games for your four bucks, and they’re okay. Space War Infinity is a vertical shoot-em-up where you power-up your ship as you go on an adventure that ends when you die. There are five different bosses to encounter along with an assortment of enemies. Space Smash is a twin-stick shooter in the vein of things like Geometry Wars. Not as good, of course. The field gets smaller as you play, but grabbing the goobers dropped by enemies will slow it down. Grab coins and you can unlock some additional ships. I’ll have a review of this soon, but both games are decent enough I suppose.

Pixel Game Maker Series Isekai Quartet Adventure:Action ($14.99)

Isekai Quartet is a cross-over anime series featuring characters from light novels like KonoSuba, The Rising of the Shield Hero, Overlord, and others. Some of the characters from that anime have been brought together in this action platformer, built using the Pixel Game Maker MV software. There are six areas each with three stages, and you can choose your favorite from five different characters. Apart from the license, this looks extremely “five-dollar 2D platformer". However, due to said license and the fact that most of these Pixel Game Maker Series games are a bit on the expensive side, this is actually a “fifteen-dollar 2D platformer". That presents a problem unless your love for Raphtalia knows no bounds.

Dunk Lords ($9.99)

If you’re looking for something vaguely NBA Jam-esque and have played Playgrounds into the, well, playground, you might want to give Dunk Lords a look. It’s an over-the-top two-on-two basketball game for up to four players via local multiplayer. There are twenty wild characters to choose from, and three different modes to play. Arcade Mode is good for pick up and play, Gauntlet Mode is kind of like a survival mode where one loss knocks you out, and Story Mode has you take control of a young star on the road to becoming a true Dunk Lord. Reviews for this game on other platforms weren’t too shabby, so as long as the Switch port keeps up its end I think hoops fans will enjoy it.

Side B ($5.99)

In this adventure game, you play as a time traveler named Johnny who wants to go back to 1998 Poland and stay there. There are puzzles to solve, various characters to talk to, and a whole lot of nostalgic references. This doesn’t seem like the most outstanding of point-and-click style adventure games, but it’s also not priced in an outstanding way. I suppose if you’re pining for 1990s Poland, this might scratch the itch a bit?

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

So yes, as mentioned up above, a lot of the big-name titles went on sale a couple of days ago. That didn’t leave a lot for today, but there are still some interesting things in here. Ori & the Will of the Wisps is a great pick-up at fifteen bucks, and the Telltale Batman adventures let you make Batman go down various paths. Operencia remains a great RPG experience at any price. There’s very little in the weekend outbox, but do check it out as well.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. Wow, what a week. Metroid Dread, eh? Very exciting stuff. I’ve got my preorder in already, and I even bought the silly toys because really how often do you get to clink your glass to a new Metroid? While this week was a bit slow for new releases, next week is going to be absolutely bananas. Don’t blow your whole June budget on those sales, in other words. I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
