Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for February 12th, 2021. Today’s article ended up a great deal larger than I anticipated and although I tried to get ahead of it yesterday, I still ended up extremely pressed for time trying to finish everything. Indeed, as I type this introduction (amusingly enough, it is the last thing I’m writing for the article) it is 10:36 PM and I have not had dinner yet. Well, let’s get into all the goodies that are waiting for us, shall we?
New Releases
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury ($59.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
If you didn’t already play this game when it released on the Wii U, this is an easy recommendation. It’s a nice contrast to Super Mario Odyssey‘s open world collectathon, focusing more on somewhat linear courses that feel more like those found in the 2D Mario games. It’s also a superb multiplayer experience, which is not something that comes around often in a 3D Mario title. For those who already played it, the biggest point of interest is probably the new Bowser’s Fury content. It’s a four-to-five hour side story that takes the framework of Super Mario 3D World and applies it to some very experimental ideas. Is it worth the price of admission on its own? No, not really. But as an excuse to pick up and play Super Mario 3D World again, it does its job.
Persephone ($8.00)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
This… is actually a really clever puzzle game. The idea here is that your character can die and resurrect as many times as needed. When she dies, she leaves her body behind. Said body can be used to hold down switches, create stepping stones, and so on. You can leave up to three bodies behind at once before they start despawning. An interesting concept that the game uses to excellent effect. There are 100 levels set across 10 different worlds, giving you quite a bit to chew on for your money. A really unusual, enjoyable game for the puzzle fans out there. Note this is also available on mobile if you want to save a buck or two.
Knight’s Retreat ($3.99)
QUByte’s chess puzzle games are getting a bit fancier with their presentation. Knight’s Retreat is the latest in the line, and regular readers know that I rather enjoy these sort of games. In spite of the more colorful backdrops, this follows in the footsteps of this publisher’s previous offerings. You need to figure out how to move your pieces to get your knights to specific marked positions in each level. It’s easy to figure out even if you’re not into chess, and a nice little puzzle game to dip into and out of when you have a few spare minutes. You get 80 levels in all, with a pleasant difficulty curve to keep things interesting.
Halloween Forever ($9.99)
This is almost exactly what it looks like from the screenshots: an old-school 8-bit style action platformer. That cuts both ways, as if you didn’t care for some of the harsher points of classic games, like being booted back to the title screen and having to start over after losing all your lives, you’re going to have a rough time with Halloween Forever. I wouldn’t say this game is brilliant by any means, but it’s fairly solid as this sort of thing goes and it’s certainly not light on content. Worth a go if you can still appreciate NES platformers.
Gal*Gun Returns ($49.99)
I’m not an expert on this series by any means, but my understanding is that this is a souped-up remaster of the original Gal*Gun and not a new game. Anyway, it’s the same idea as usual for this series. A rail shooter of sorts where instead of killing people with lead bullets you zap cute girls with your Pheromone Shots to drive them into a, er, satisfied state. Shoot them in the right locations and you can trigger an “Ecstasy Shot" that will satisfy them in one hit. Anyway, this remaster includes most of the DLC from back in the day without any extra cost. That means more than 70 girls, 423 types of panties to discover, and a variety of modes to play. So yeah, that’s what that is. Enjoy?
#1 Crosswords ($3.99)
You know, for how ubiquitous they tend to be in the newspaper pages and puzzle books, crosswords rarely get adapted into video game form. I’ll grant that they fall into that category where a pencil and paper handle them so well there’s almost no point to making them digital, but that could be said for Picross puzzles as well. Anyway, this is a rather low-cost game that gives you 100 crossword puzzles to complete. The take seen here is more similar to a traditional crossword than what we’ve seen in the various offerings from Lightwood Games, so if that’s what you’re after you really can’t lose by picking this up.
UltraGoodness 2 ($4.99)
Okay, so you remember the main gimmick of SUPERHOT? Where time only moves when you do? Imagine that in a top-down arena shooter, and that’s kind of UltraGoodness 2‘s thing. It’s colorful, reasonably fun, and there’s an upgrade system to try to keep you engaged. I think it gets old after a couple of hours, but if you’re looking for something to pick up and mess around with in short bursts, this isn’t a bad way to spend a fiver at all. Much like how it worked in SUPERHOT, introducing a way for players to completely halt the usual chaos of an action game at their leisure makes for a rather interesting experience.
Steamroll ($9.99)
I would describe this as a steampunk-themed mini-golf puzzle game, and it’s surprisingly not too bad. You control a steam-powered ball and your goal is to make your way through each of the levels, which typically involves following a convoluted path from one end to the other. You need to manage your steam usage and deploy all the tricks in your arsenal to get where you want to go. While early levels give you a wide margin of error, the deeper you go into the game the more puzzle-heavy it becomes. At only a few hours long, it’s not going to keep you busy for all that long. But it’s a decent enough way to spend an evening if you’re puzzle-inclined and don’t mind the somewhat over-played visual style.
Speedway Bundle Stock & Truck ($19.99)
This is a bundle that puts two titles together: Speedway Racing, and Speed Truck Racing. Amusingly, since both titles regularly sell for $9.99 separately, you’re paying a penny more by buying this bundle. That’s assuming neither game is on sale, and they usually are. This bundle will probably also get deep discounts now and then, so if you actually want to own both of these middling-at-best racers do make sure to check the prices of all of the involved SKUs. As I write this, buying both separately would cost you $13.98. So… yeah, do what you will with that.
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
Here’s where the majority of the action is happening today. Almost three hundred new sales and discounts, and I can’t really make a bunch of specific recommendations. I will at least point to the Syberia 1 & 2 pack, as you can get both of those acclaimed adventure games for a couple of bucks. Wild. Also note sales from Supergiant Games, Bandai Namco, Capcom, and Nicalis. With all the new sales you may be tempted to ignore the weekend outbox, but make sure you have a look through it as there are some great games in there as well.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. The latest update in the Shaun Hospital Saga is that I’m going to be having a minor operation next Tuesday so that the doctors can get some meat to test and see if I’m in big trouble or only a little trouble. I won’t need to stay at the hospital so you shouldn’t notice any interruptions with the articles. And that’s good news because there are some really fantastic new titles hitting next week. I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
