Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for September 2nd, 2020. It’s a bit smaller today than it was yesterday, but there’s still some good stuff to check out. We’ve got news of a new game from a developer whose work I enjoy quite a bit, summaries of the new games that hit the eShop today, and lists of incoming and outgoing sales for the thrifty among us to peruse and carefully consider. Let’s get down to business!
News
‘Gunman Clive’ Creator Announces ‘Super Punch Patrol’, Out September 17th
Bertil Horberg, the creator of the smash hit Gunman Clive series and the bombastic Mechstermination Force, has announced his next release. Super Punch Patrol is a beat-em-up with a sketchy style similar to Gunman Clive, allowing you to clean up the streets as one of three characters. The game features a local two-player mode and some unlockable costumes to spice things up. The game is scheduled for release on September 17th, and the asking price is an absurdly low $4.99. Bertil, you don’t charge enough for your games! But I will not complain too loudly!
The Switch eShop Gets a Couple of Improvements
It’s interesting how Nintendo has stuck with its very bare-bones UI for both the OS and eShop over the years. It’s so different from the company’s previous approach. Now, it’s not bad, but I think most people can agree that the eShop in particular could use a few improvements. Today brings a couple of new features, and although they aren’t the most Earth-shattering of things, they’re quite welcome. First up, you can now cancel pre-orders up until seven days before release. To be accurate, you won’t be charged until then. The other improvement is that you can now see how many days are left in a sale without having to go into each game’s page. Japan has had this for a while, and it’s quite useful.
New Releases
Mask of Mists ($14.99)
This is a first-person action-adventure game where you need to navigate dungeons and solve some puzzles. It offers a decent if not spectacular few hours of dungeon-delving, though the puzzle bits are definitely better than the action bits in my opinion. There are some very light RPG elements in here but don’t expect too much in that regard. Anyway, it’s fine for what it is. I think it’s teetering on being a little too expensive for what you get, but only just barely. The puzzles are nice, however, and if that’s your thing you’ll probably be happy enough with Mask of Mists.
Piffle: A Cat Puzzle Adventure ($19.95)
Hipster Whale makes its Switch publishing debut (I think?) with this port of its free-to-play mobile puzzler. Presumably this includes a lot of the goodies that are otherwise sold as IAPs in that version. As for the game itself, it’s a lot like BBtan or the many games that used a similar concept. You launch large numbers of little critters at blocks to try to clear them. There are a variety of power-ups and balls to collect, but otherwise this is pretty much like any other game of this sort. Personally, I’m happy enough getting my fill from the free mobile version, but this is a fine port with all the shenanigans stripped out for those who want that.
Sky Jaguar 2 ($3.99)
This game has an oddly complicated history for a four-dollar shoot-em-up. Way back in the early 1980s, Konami released a Xevious-inspired vertical shooter named Sky Jaguar in the arcades. It was of so little note that it only received a single port, to the MSX. A couple of years ago, a developer named Vikalb made sort of an unofficial follow-up to that game for the MSX, and this Switch version is a spiffed-up remake of that. Hunh. Well, it’s a simple shoot-em-up with a few different weapons and a decent enough feel to it. I’ve played worse games at this price, for sure.
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
Plenty of good titles with discounts today. Vampyr is a nice choice for those looking for an RPG with some bite to it. Streets of Rogue is an interesting mash-up of brawler and roguelite. Mr. Shifty is plenty of fun. And hey, it’s never a bad day to pick up the Ace Attorney Trilogy for half-price. The outbox doesn’t have too much of note in it, but mind Jenny LeClue and Witcheye. Their launch discounts are ending soon. I suspect this is also your last chance to get NBA 2K20 and Football Manager 2020 Touch on sale before their successors take over.
