Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for July 17th, 2020. What do you get when you have a huge list of new releases and an absolutely massive bunch of new discounts? Some very sore hands for Shaun, that’s what. We’ve got summaries of all the new games that hit the eShop today, plus the aforementioned big-boy list of incoming sales. The outgoing sales are there as well, but they did nothing to harm my aging joints and tendons. Let’s dive in!
New Releases
Paper Mario: The Origami King ($59.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
With the release of this game, it’s official: Paper Mario as a series has fewer RPGs in it than non-RPGs, even if we very liberally consider Super Paper Mario an RPG. What I’m trying to say here is that it’s perhaps time to let go of the idea that any given new installment is going to suddenly follow up on The Thousand-Year Door and instead appreciate these games for what they are. They’re very creative little adventure games filled with interesting puzzles and humorous writing, and at least for me, that’s enough. If you don’t feel the same, that’s fair. Anyway, I’m excited to see what’s up with that sinister Origami Peach, and will be devoting my weekend to finding out all about her and her ominous plans.
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus ($39.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
There are a lot of Warhammer games around these days, and you can never really tell if any given release is something worth paying attention to or if it’s just a turkey. Space turkey. Turkey-orc. This one is not a turkey. Using the Adeptus Mechanicus as the centerpiece of its story, this game plays things a bit safe and makes a turn-based tactical strategy game out of the setting. The story is very well-written and was clearly handled by someone who really gets the source material, and while the gameplay perhaps lacks the tactical depth that some other examples of the genre have offered to Switch players, there are a lot of fresh, engaging ideas here that help the experience stand out. If you like the setting or the genre, give it a shot. You’ll probably dig it.
Ultra Hat Dimension ($4.99)
SwitchArcade Highlight!
Well, let’s see what Ratalaika has found for us this week. This is a puzzle game where you have to use the power of four different kinds of hats to solve each stage. The gimmick is that there are different kinds of creatures called Spluffs. If you try to walk near them and you aren’t wearing the right hat, you’ll get punched. If you wear a matching hat, you can push the Spluff and it will punch any other Spluffs wearing different hats, pushing them out of the way. At its core it’s Sokoban but there are a couple of twists here that, when taken along with the adorable aesthetic, make the game worth paying attention to. For five dollars, it’s about what it needs to be.
Get 10 Quest ($2.99)
You may have encountered this game on mobile before, but the idea is basically that you merge adjacent tiles of the same number to create a single tile of one number higher. The ultimate goal is to try to create a tile with a 10 on it without running into a deadlock situation. It’s quite enjoyable, though it’s one of those games I want to be able to get into and out of within a few seconds, a style more well-suited to my phone than my Switch. But if you’re okay with this kind of quick, casual experience on your console, three bucks is a very reasonable price to pay. This version includes the original endless mode along with a few other special modes to spice things up.
Starlit Adventures Golden Stars ($19.99)
You can probably tell from the screenshot, but this is a port of a mobile game. It’s actually a free game on mobile, albeit with a lot of in-app purchases on offer. As always with games that make this transition, I’m a bit worried about how the game’s balance has been adjusted to compensate for the fact that you are paying a rather stiff twenty dollars up front. It seems like it just gives you all of the suits up front that you would ordinarily unlock at a trickle. It also offers a multiplayer mode for up to four players locally. Otherwise, this seems to be very similar to the reasonably amusing original. You have to dig through vertical courses, searching for stars and defeating enemies as you make your way to the goal at the bottom. I’ll probably stick with the mobile version, but I’ve seen worse things for twenty bucks.
Slots of Poker at Aces Casino ($7.99)
Oh joy, it’s a series. Following up on Roulette at Aces Casino, the curiously-titled Slots of Poker at Aces Casino offers up 15 different slot machines to play. I’m assuming most of them use a Poker motif, because if not that title becomes even stranger. As the game’s description says, you just take a seat in the casino and spin, spin, spin while you win, win, win. Note that you will not actually win anything, you’ll be hitting buttons rather than spinning, and your eight bucks could be used to buy a huge assortment of better games. I mean, it’s almost one-seventh of the way to buying Dragon Quest XI, which has an in-game casino that is roughly a hundred times more fun than this.
One Dog Story ($14.99)
As I often do with games that have been released on PC before hitting Switch, I popped over to Steam to see what the word was on One Dog Story. I mean, it’s a cute looking 2D action-platformer starring a gun-toting dog. What’s not to like about that premise? I found a few interesting things. First, the reviews on the game for the first couple of years it was out were pretty negative. Many cited bugs, while others complained about the short length. Next, the developer did make a bunch of updates this year. Recent reviews are far better, so that seems to be an open-and-shut case. But then I noticed a lot of the recent positive reviews are identical comments under different names, so I’m guessing they’re not legit. I don’t know what to think now, but I do know that the Switch has plenty of 2D platformers at this price point or lower that don’t have so many shenanigans hanging about them.
Power Racing Bundle ($16.99)
A new bundle, and this one isn’t from Digerati. You get two racers in one purchase here. Speedway Racing aims to give you the classic arcade stock car racing feel. I also aim at many things and miss completely, so I can relate. WildTrax Racing, on the other hand, sends you off-road with some wild vehicles and treacherous environments. Both games support local multiplayer for up to four players. Ordinarily, this bundle would save you a whopping buck over buying the two games separately, but at the moment WildTrax Racing is actually on sale so it’s cheaper to not buy this bundle. Well, that’s the usual deal with these bundles. You really have to keep an eye on the current prices of what you’re buying.
Unlock The King 2 ($0.99)
Unlock The King 2, or as the villainous Carter Dotson might call it 2 Unlock 2 King, offers another 70 chess puzzles for you to solve. You need to move the pieces to open a path to unlock the king piece. It’s apparently meant for new players and those who enjoyed the original game alike, so you can feel free to hop in here if you haven’t played Unlock The King. There aren’t a lot of new things I can say about these games at this point. They’re fun little puzzlers that are cheap as chips, so if you like solving logic brain-teasers you really don’t have much to lose.
Sudoku Relax 5 Full Bloom ($4.99)
Oh well, there you go. The first four games in this series were each devoted to one of the four seasons, so I wondered what they would do if they decided to make a fifth game. Apparently, we’re looping back around to spring. Other than the window dressing, you get much the same proposal here that you did in all of the other games. There are more than 300 Sudoku puzzles here spanning from easy to hard, and solving puzzles unlocks new backgrounds and music to use. Not a lot, mind you. Just three of each.
Travel Mosaics 4: Adventures in Rio ($7.99)
The Walker family is on the move yet again, and that means one thing and one thing only: more Picross-style puzzles. Specifically, you get 140 colorful nonograms to solve, along with 20 bonus levels. The setting this time is Rio, and as in previous games in the series you’ll end up collecting souvenirs and so on. You also get the customary trivia questions, which are an amusing bonus if nothing else. This series is good for people who are new to Picross puzzles and want to learn the ropes. Veteran players will probably find it lacking in challenge, however.
Desktop Volleyball ($7.43)
You know, I could have sworn there was already a volleyball game in the Desktop Sports series, but I guess I was wrong. Anyway, you probably know how these games work by now. You get a very simple arcade-style take on the sport played on a variety of amusing backdrops, including of course the titular desktop. There are a few different modes to play, and lots of uniforms and power-up items to collect. Up to four players can join in via local multiplayer, so it’s a nice game to pull out for all the parties we’re not having this year. Look, if it’s not better than Super Spike V’Ball, I’m not interested.
SpyHack ($9.99)
In SpyHack you play as a spy, who also hacks. A hack-spy, if you will. You head out on missions all around the world and use your hacking skills to take over devices and objects to aid you in your spying work. Your goal is to stop some sort of secret project that threatens the safety of the world. Possibly the return of the McLean Deluxe? Anyway, you help out field agents and mess with security clowns by using whatever electronic devices you can get your hands on. Is this the indie homage to Haunting Starring Polterguy we’ve all been waiting for? It’s highly unlikely! Hack the world, buddies.
Super Club Tennis ($59.99)
This tennis game really doesn’t look like something that should be selling for full price, and apparently its publisher agrees as it’s already discounted down to half-price for launch. Up to two players can join in via local multiplayer, and there are lots of mini-games to unlock as you work your way through the game. The on-court action leans more into the fantastical side of things, with exaggerated animations and wild super moves. I’ve said before that it’s phenomenally difficult to mess up a tennis video game, but it’s also rather tough to make one stand out. I’m not sure Super Club Tennis does, particularly to the extent that its price suggests.
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
Wow, lots of new sales today. A huge part of that list belongs to Digerati, but there are some sales from Team 17, Image & Form, Oddworld Inhabitants, and many more. Some quick recommendations from me include Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair, Danmaku Unlimited 3, Mechstermination Force, and SUPERHOT. There are lots of great games in there besides those, though, so do check things carefully. The weekend outbox is a bit heftier than usual too, so don’t forget to have a look at those titles as well.

That’s all for today and this week, friends. We sure went out with a bang this time. My weekend plans are mostly wrapped up with Paper Mario: The Origami King, but I’m hoping to finish CrossCode as well. I’ll also be messing around with my new Evercade handheld, but that has nothing to do with the Switch. What are you all playing this weekend? Feel free to let me know in the comments. I hope you all have an excellent weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
