Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for May 20th, 2020. It’s Wednesday today, which is typically not a very exciting day for Switch releases and news. But even so, we’ve got two decent-looking new releases to check out and a bit of news to gnaw on. That’s not even mentioning the sales lists, which have some very enticing deals in them to consider. Let’s slide on in and see what’s what!
News
Crown a Victor in the Next ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Event
It’s that time of the week again, which means we’ve got news about the next weekend Super Smash Bros. Ultimate event. This time around, the event will focus on characters who wear crowns or tiaras. So sure, Princess Peach. But also Wart, and King Knight, and many others. Those spirits will feature and defeating them will earn you more gold than usual. The event kicks off this Friday and will run through the weekend, which should be plenty of time for you to pile up some gold for a rainy day.
Switch Online Subscribers Can Now Enjoy Four New Games
As announced last week, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers have a set of newly-added retro games to dig into via the NES Switch Online and Super NES Switch Online apps. In the NES app, there’s just one new game to play: Tecmo’s Rygar. It’s a rough but enjoyable action-adventure game, and some might even call it a proto-Metroidvania. Over on the Super NES app, Nintendo’s classic puzzler Panel de Pon has been added. You may know this under one of its other titles like Tetris Attack or Pokemon Puzzle League. This is the Japanese version, but it should be easy enough to sort out even if you can’t read Japanese. Next on the list, Natsume’s Cabal shooter Wild Guns brings Wild West-themed action that can be enjoyed alone or with a friend. Rounding out the line-up is the odd deep cut Operation Logic Bomb, the third part in a top-down shooter series that started with Game Boy game Fortified Zone. Just update the apps and you’ll be ready to play!
New Releases
Cannibal Cuisine ($12.99)
Overcooked has been a big hit on Switch, and as a result has inspired quite a few more cooking games to appear on the platform. Cannibal Cuisine, as you might expect from the name, adds a people-eating-people twist to the action. Don’t worry, this is less the Jeffrey Dahmer type of cannibal and more the cartoonish “cooking Bugs Bunny" type. Anyway, it’s couch co-op wacky fun with a unique theme and a few gameplay twists. At least according to the shop description, you can do multiplayer either locally or online, and up to four players are supported. I’ve never been big on this kind of theme but if you’re looking for a new party-style game to play and don’t mind the subject matter, Cannibal Cuisine might do the job.
Knight Swap 2 ($0.99)
QUByte is really cranking out these puzzle games lately. This is a sequel to Knight Swap, and it offers up 50 more puzzles designed around the idea of swapping Knight pieces on tricky boards. The gimmicks from the original game, like teleportation tiles, rotating tiles, and so on make a return, but there are some new things to contend with here as well. I’ve recommended a few of these chess puzzle games now since they’re well-built and cheap, so I suspect some of you have a few piled up already. But if you happen to be looking for another one, you really can’t go wrong here for the price.
Sales
(North American eShop, US Prices)
We’re not even on the busiest sales day of the week and we already have some good stuff worth considering. The Ubisoft stuff gets discounted pretty regularly, as does Monster Hunter, but it’s all quite good and worth owning. More interesting are the Namco sales. Namco Museum has been on sale before, but I think this is its lowest price yet. And Pac-Man CE 2 Plus is almost never on sale. I mean sure, it was free on other platforms a couple of weeks ago, but this is as cheap as it gets for the Switch Plus version. Fans of over-the-top sports will want to check out Mutant League Football for half price, too. That’s not even getting into the outbox, which has a lot of games you may want to pick up for low prices while you can.
