SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Mario Kart North American Open’ Event Coming, Today’s New Releases Including ‘Telling Lies’, the Latest Sales, and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for April 28th, 2020. In today’s article, we’ve got some news about a retro game re-release hitting soon and a big Mario Kart event. We also take a look at both of today’s new releases, then finish things up with the usual list of sales information. It’s not a terribly busy day today, but what’s here is definitely some good stuff. Let’s check it out!

NEOGEO Pocket Game ‘SNK Gals’ Fighters’ Coming to Switch Tomorrow

The NEOGEO system is celebrating its 30th birthday, presumably enjoying a birthday meal of hot dogs loaded with all the toppings. SNK has a little something to commemorate the date: a Switch version of SNK Gals’ Fighters, one of the better fighters found on its short-lived NEOGEO Pocket Color handheld. The game is scheduled for release tomorrow, and if you’ve played the pre-order bonus Samurai Shodown NEOGEO Pocket Color game that came with the new version of Samurai Shodown, you’ll know what to expect in terms of fidelity and options. Apparently we’ll also be getting some news soon about Samurai Shodown NEOGEO Collection, which was announced a while back with very little mention since. Let’s hope SNK can sweet-talk Capcom into letting them release the SNK vs Capcom games from the NEOGEO Pocket Color at some point. Those were great.

Nintendo Announces ‘Mario Kart North American Open’ Event

While there have been a number of events in many Nintendo games, it’s far rarer for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to host one. Well, heads up, because one is incoming. On May 8th to May 10th, you can join in on the Mario Kart North American Open event, where the Top 8 winners each day will take home 2500 My Nintendo Gold Points as a prize. That’s basically a $25 value! Not bad, not bad. Too bad the competition is utterly wild in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but hey, you never know what will happen unless you try. If you want to participate, simply enter the following tournament codes each day:

May 8th: 2598-8511-0827
May 9th: 1828-4413-4955
May 10th: 1403-6422-4043

This event is only open to residents of the United States and Canada 13 years of age and up, and residents of Mexico 18 years of age and up. You’ll naturally need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to join in. Give it your best shot!

New Releases

Telling Lies ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

For all of the developers I’ve seen try to make FMV games work over the decades, very few have managed to get them right. Sam Barlow is one of them. Her Story was quite brilliant, and while Telling Lies isn’t quite as good, it’s still an excellent experience. You’ve got a laptop loaded up with a stolen NSA database. It contains two years of footage of four different people who were all involved in a particular incident. You have to search through the database, compare stories, and try to figure out the truth of the situation. It’s very interesting stuff, particularly for those who enjoy a solid narrative experience. That said, if you don’t mind playing on your mobile device, it’s about a third of the price there.

Moving Out ($24.99)

The latest couch co-op game that involves you having to coordinate with your friends to complete tasks, Moving Out lives up to its name by asking you to clear furniture out of various spaces and into your moving truck. Up to four players can join in on the fun, and this is obviously one of those cases where the more people you have the better. It’s fine enough if you’re looking for another game of this sort, though it’s lacking a certain something that keeps it from living up to the wild fun of stuff like Overcooked. Not bad, just a bit predictable and bland.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

Yeah, well… there are definitely some games on sale today, aren’t there? Some good stuff, but nothing surprising. I guess I’ll gesture wildly in the direction of Hyper Sentinel again, and I’d certainly recommend Agent A if you haven’t already played it. Two dollars? That’s a real deal. In the outbox, Capcom’s latest round of discounts is coming to a close. They will be back around again in about a month or so, I’m sure. But if you want some Capcom goodness in your life right now, you know what to do.

We’ll have some news to dig into, even if it only ends up being the new Smash event. Finally, there should be some new sales to check out as well. I hope you all have a nice Tuesday, and as always, thanks for reading!
