SwitchArcade Round-Up: ‘Prinny 1-2: Exploded and Reloaded’ Coming to Switch, ‘Pokemon Mystery Dungeon’ and Today’s Other New Releases, the Latest Sales, and More

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for March 6th, 2020. In today’s article, we’ve got summaries of all of today’s new releases including the latest Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game. There are a couple of news items, each with their own lovely trailer to take in. Finally, there are some sales. Not as many sales as I feared yesterday, but certainly a number greater than zero. Let’s fly on in and see what we’ve got!

News

‘Prinny 1-2: Exploded and Reloaded’ Coming to Switch This Fall

About 10 or so years back when Disgaea was flying particularly high, the charming Prinny characters got their own little spin-off series on the PlayStation Portable. Consisting of two rather challenging side-scrolling action games, the Prinny series in some ways predicted the rise of ultra-hard platformers where you just die a ton of times. Prinny 1-2: Exploded and Reloaded is a Switch-exclusive set of both games plus all DLC, with the games apparently enhanced and improved. Check out the trailer and if you like what you see, pencil some room into your schedule this fall.

Check Out A New ‘Trials of Mana’ Trailer

Yeah, that big Square Enix remake of one of their hit games from the late 1990s is just around the corner and seems to be shaping up well. I’m of course talking about Trials of Mana, the 3D remake of the Super Famicom classic Seiken Densetsu 3 that was only recently translated for the first time in the Collection of Mana set that came out last year. Anyway, Square’s got a new trailer up with gameplay footage, so do check it out. The game is scheduled for release on April 24th, so prepare what you need to. Wild that we went more than 20 years without Seiken Densetsu 3 in the West and now we’ve gotten two versions in less than a year.

New Releases

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX ($59.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

It feels like it’s been ages since the last Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game came out. If you’re not familiar with the series, these are basically simple Japanese-style roguelikes where you play as a Pokemon. The more relaxed challenge compared to most examples of the genre have made this particular brand of Mystery Dungeon more popular with the general audience, and the late-game content often satisfies those looking for something a bit harder. This installment in particular is a remake of the first game in the series, with plenty of improvements to bring it up to modern specs. I enjoy these games, but there’s no question that some find them a little dull due to how easy they tend to be.

Afterparty ($19.99)

SwitchArcade Highlight!

This is an adventure game about two recently-deceased friends who find themselves in hell. That’s a pretty lousy place to be, but there’s apparently one way to avoid eternal damnation: outdrinking the devil himself. If you can drink Satan under the table, he’ll let you go back to Earth and have another chance. So yeah, that’s a really great idea for a game. In terms of mechanics, it mostly boils around to guiding conversations and trying to learn about various characters. This one comes from the developers behind Oxenfree, so if you enjoyed that game you’ll probably want to give this one a go.

Save Koch ($20.00)

This is an interesting idea. You play as a godfather-type character who is holed up in a panic room as his enemies converge on him. Someone is trying to take your place and you need to figure out who and deal with them before time runs out. You have to find whoever put a hit on you and also deal with a mole in your organization, and pretty much all of that stuff plus the in-game events are randomized each time you start. Unfortunately in spite of this, the game ends up getting quite repetitive after a few runs. It’s a surprisingly complicated game, but once you work out how the strategy works, it’s going to apply successfully almost every time. I like the concept a lot, but the execution just doesn’t work as well as it should.

Swordbreaker The Game ($4.99)

This is a digital gamebook that, as far as I can tell, isn’t based on a real book or anything like that. But it has tons of great illustrations and plenty of choices that will lead to certain doom, so it’s got the basics down pat. Don’t expect any Fighting Fantasy-style dice roll combat here, as you’re really just making choices as you go. But hey, nothing wrong with that. Especially given the price tag is about the same as a Choose Your Own Adventure cost back in the 1980s.

Breeder Homegrown: Director’s Cut ($4.99)

This is a rather brief retro-style horror game. It takes about an hour or so to clear if you get right into it. An old man who has spent most of his life in a clinic escapes and returns to his childhood home. The memories dredged up by the visit reveal many events from his past, including a mysterious creature that has caused issues with his family for generations. Will there be a twist in the end? Well look pal, I’m not saying there won’t be a twist. Honestly, you probably won’t play this more than once, but it’s about the price of a movie rental and offers about as much entertainment.

Sales

(North American eShop, US Prices)

As I said above, the list of new sales wasn’t quite as massive as I was expecting. It’s still a healthy list, however, with some interesting titles we don’t often see on sale like Neo Atlas 1469 and Monster Boy. Have a look through and see what catches your eye. The weekend outbox is pretty quiet outside of the end of the latest Image & Form sale, and even in the case of those games, the next set of discounts is generally right around the corner.

That’s all that’s good for today and this week, friends. Not quite the flood of new releases we see in some weeks, but certainly several interesting games to keep you busy. Next week’s schedule is looking like a light one as well, though games seem to come out of nowhere some days so we’ll just have to see what happens. I hope you all have a great weekend, and as always, thanks for reading!
