Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for November 26th, 2019. In today’s article, we’ve got lots of cool news to check out. There are also some new releases to check out, though I’m going to be real with you: none of them are very good. That’s how it goes some days. Aside from that, we also have a few new sales to check out, and some outgoing sales to consider. Let’s dig in!
News
‘Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition’ Coming in February 2020
Here’s the one I’ve been waiting for. Not that there was any doubt after the terri-bad Devil May Cry 2 hit the eShop, but the HD version of Devil May Cry 3: Special Edition will be making its way to Switch. It looks set to hit in February 2020, and it will sell for $19.99 just like the previous two did. Yes, this piece-meal way of selling them results in a rudely more expensive price for Switch owners compared to other platform owners, but on the plus side, it means we can just buy the first and third games and pretend the second one doesn’t exist. A physical version of the trilogy will be sold in Japan, but it will only include the first game on the cart along with download codes for the other two, so phooey to that. Now the real question is… Devil May Cry 4?
‘Shovel Knight’ Tunes Come to ‘Just Shapes and Beats’
Shovel Knight has only two goals in life: to rescue Shield Knight, and to make an appearance in every indie game ever made. Well, one more mark towards that latter goal. In the upcoming free Mixtape Update for Just Shapes and Beats, special remixed versions of some of the music from Shovel Knight will be added to the game. Four tracks for each of the four potential protagonists will be available, and you can unlock them through various means including, but not limited to, scanning the respective Shovel Knight Amiibo. You can also use any Amiibo to get 100 Beat Points up to five times per day. This new update will hit on December 4th, so get ready to shovel!
8BitDo’s Latest Controller is Teeny-Tiny
There are lots of great options out there for third-party controllers these days. For my money, 8BitDo makes the best ones. I mean, that M30 controller is just so… sometimes when I’m feeling down, I just hold it in my hands and I feel happier. The directional pad is pure heaven. Um, but this isn’t about the M30, is it? It’s about the company’s latest design, which seems aimed directly at those who picked up a Switch Lite. Dubbed the Zero 2 Bluetooth Gamepad, this is a keychain-sized controller that appears to be designed for retro games and simpler 2D titles. It features a cross-shaped directional pad, the familiar Y/B/X/A set of face buttons, L/R shoulder buttons, and -/+ buttons. You probably won’t be using this for Breath of the Wild, but if you want to play some SNES classics or a bit of Freedom Planet, it will do you just fine. It comes in three colors that mostly match the three colors of Switch Lites, and it will sell for $19.99. You can pre-order it now on Amazon if you like.
New Releases
Pine ($24.99)
This one came out about a month ago on PC, so the game itself is a known quantity. It’s an extremely ambitious game given that it’s made by a small developer, but we all know what that can lead to. Indeed, the PC version was quite buggy and given the humbler specs of the Switch and the relatively short amount of time since the original release, I’m not extremely confident about the state of this Switch version. Anyway, the idea here is basically an open world action-adventure game in the vein of things like Fable or The Legend of Zelda. There’s apparently a functioning ecosystem at play where all kind of things are connected and will work with or without your input. I’d have to put more time into it before saying whether I could recommend it or not.
Monster Jam Steel Titans ($29.99)
This game got pretty terrible reviews on other platforms, and this Switch version isn’t going to change anyone’s mind on it. Lousy physics, terrible AI opponents, and technical issues plagued other versions of the game, and all of that is just as bad if not worse here. I suppose if you love monster trucks enough and are very, very forgiving, you’ll at least find a good amount of content in the game, but I can’t in any sort of good conscience recommend picking up the Switch port even if you’re willing to go that far.
Chameleon ($4.99)
My first memory of this game comes from when it was a budget $20 release on the Nintendo DS. It was a bit of a shaky proposition at that price, as it’s a pretty average puzzle game without a whole lot of depth to it. It had different gameplay modes, but it didn’t really help as the core gameplay was somewhat bland. This Switch version looks like it’s mostly similar to that previous release, but I suppose at a quarter of the price it’s a better deal. I’d still personally pass on it, but I suppose if you want something quirky there are worse ways to blow a fiver.
Sales
Once again, not much here for new sales. But this is probably the only day in recent memory where I can say there isn’t a single bad game on the list. Well, okay. That first Telltale Batman title is a bit uneven, but I certainly wouldn’t call it bad. For less than four bucks per season, you can get a whole lot of Batman joy. Darkest Dungeon? It’s on sale pretty often, but it’s never a bad time to buy it. The DLC is also on sale, even though I don’t list it here. The outbox cannot hold a similar claim to be true, sadly. There are some decent games in there, and even a few great ones, but I suspect we’ll see all of it on sale again before we put up our new calendars.
