We’ve been big fans of developer Gionathan Pesaresi aka Neutronized for many years now, and while he’s released numerous games in a variety of styles both on his own and with partners like Nitrome or FDG Games, I think most people know him best as the creator of the Super Cat Tales series of platformers. In fact, you may not have realized it because it was such a low-key launch, but a Super Cat Tales spinoff game called Magic Bridge (Free) launched just a few weeks ago. Check it out! But what I’m REALLY here to talk about is the next new game from Neutronized. It’s called Yokai Dungeon, and it’s sort of an action puzzler based around the yokai in Japanese folklore. You’ll play as a variety of different characters and the object is to push blocks into enemies to destroy them across randomly generated dungeons. It’s all well explained in this excellent developer diary video from Neutronized.
As you can see, there’s quite a bit more to Yokai Dungeon than just solving each level. You can come across shops where you can equip various types of items, and the more than 20 playable characters in the game all have different statistics that should help them feel distinct from one another. I also really love that Neutronized solicited ideas for new characters from fans, and actually implemented quite a few of them into the game. This also leaves open the possibility of even more new characters being added in future updates, as the options for character types is basically infinite. As stated at the beginning of the video above, Yokai Dungeon is feature complete and submitted to Apple, and a release date announcement should be coming soon. Given the previous work of Neutronized, I really can’t wait for this one.
