Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. Surprisingly, there aren’t so many interesting holiday updates this week. No, most of the coolest updates were just… normal updates. But hey, that’s fine, I’m sure we’ll have plenty of Saint Nick on deck next time around. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself using AppShopper or by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s dig in!
Teen Titans Go! Figure, $3.99 Just as its predecessor did, Teen Titans Go! Figure has gotten a nice little content update to give you even more to do. Granted, there’s already quite a bit in the game, but how does multiplayer sound? That’s just one part of the new Legion of Doom update for the game, with new figures, quests, and more to check off the ol’ list. It’s notable that the developer is calling the multiplayer mode a beta at present, probably because balancing is going to have to be an on-going thing. As is, it’s very easy for someone who has sunk a lot of time or money into the game to dominate.
Choice of Games, Free Regular readers know that if the Choice of Games hub app is showing up in these articles, it means there’s a new adventure available to buy and play. Well, I’m writing about that app right now, so there’s obviously something new. It’s Death Collector, a hefty 300,000 word story that puts you in the shoes of the titular Death Collector, whose job is to go around to dying people and cut out their tongues in order to preserve their stories. Weeeeeird. What will you do with the knowledge you earn? Play as the kind of character you want, and make the choices you must.
Marvel Contest of Champions, Free There comes a time in every game-as-a-service based on the Marvel license that all of the most popular characters have been burnt through, leaving you with some… slightly obscure characters. I’m not sure if that’s what has happened with Contest of Champions, but it looks like the new playable characters in the latest event are none other than New Warriors Night Thrasher and Darkhawk. Yes, Darkhawk. But you know what? I freaking love the New Warriors, and I love Darkhawk even more. If the developers had thrown in Speedball, I’d have to come up with a new award. As is, I’ve got a shiny coveted UMMSotW award for this game this week.
TRANSFORMERS: Forged to Fight, Free Okay, if you grew up with the first generation of Transformers toys, you’ll know that there was one particular character whose toy design felt like a huge step above the others. Curiously, his designs in the comics, TV shows, and pretty much anywhere other than the toyline looked a little… different. That character was Jetfire, and like most early Transformers, he was grabbed from an unrelated toyline in Japan. The toyline in question was for Macross, which is generally best known in North America for being the basis of Robotech. Yeah, Jetfire was a Veritech fighter, and his toy was great. So he’s coming to Forged to Fight, and he looks pretty much like a Veritech fighter. Nice.
Pocket Build, $0.99 Some updates are so huge, so packed with details, so utterly epic that I simply cannot hope to stuff all of the bits and bobs into a mere paragraph. The latest update to Pocket Build is not one of those, but I think you’re going to like it anyway. Why? Well, because it makes it so that TNT barrels will now destroy land. Now you can clear large areas of land just like early humans did: by blowing it the heck up, along with anyone or anything that may accidentally be in the area. This update also fixes some bugs, but does not let you use gamma bombs to destroy land, thus leaving the terrible secret of the Hulk in the hands of one man alone.
Hitman Sniper, $0.99 When you think Christmas, you almost have to think about a bald assassin who kills people for money so long as the money is right. Almost. Okay, I mean, probably not. But Square Enix is out here trying, adding a nifty Christmas update to Hitman Sniper. Everything has been painted up in holiday colors, with special costumes for Krug and Basia and decorations all over the place. There are new props and special items, appropriately-themed music, a holiday-themed tier 4 rifle called the Merry Maker, and freezing bullets that shatter enemies as though they just stole the last Turbo Man figure from Sub-Zero. This update also adds three additional levels and unique perks to all of the platinum tier rifles.
Fortnite, Free Wait, we’ve got a big Fortnite update in here this week and I didn’t put it into the title to juice the SEO? Aw man, Eli’s going to dock my pay for this one. Well, you probably already know this, but Fortnite got a big update to kick off Season 7. There are Ziplines you can use to quickly make your way around the maps, and the Stormwing plane will let you take to the skies. This update also includes Wraps, which let you dress up your weapons in vehicles in all-new looks. Will you go for a nice match with your outfit, or an ugly clash? These are the kinds of choices that make Fortnite one of the most compelling narrative experiences of our generation. Oh, and if your device has the power, the game will now run at 60 FPS. Zowie!
Angry Birds 2, Free Even at Christmas, the birds are still angry. Will nothing slake their thirst for fury? No, nothing will. They are forever angry. They will live unsatisfying lives and die early due to the stresses placed on their cardiovascular systems and brains. But at least they still have an active game, right? Angry Birds 2 has a new icon for the holidays, and it also has a new bird, new hats, new events, two new chapers, and a new and improved hat shop. But you know what it doesn’t have? Earnest, warm smiles. Go hug your loved ones and appreciate that what is ordinary for you will eternally be out of the grasp of these avians.
Golf Clash: Play With Friends, Free Hey, this is one of the most popular games on the App Store right now, and is likely making so much money that its bank account’s rounding errors could make you cry. And it has a new update! Fancy! So what’s up with this new version? Um, not much, based on the update notes. You’ve got a new Max Curl ability, which I suppose allows you to make the most of your club’s curl abilities. There are also some new tweaks based on player feedback, like letting you choose your golf bag before you take your first shot in a match.
Star Warsâ„¢: Galaxy of Heroes, Free I’ve lost track: do we love Star Wars now? Hate it? Are we bored of it? Is Episode 9 still coming? Did Thanos’s snap affect the Star Wars universe, and if not, why not? Hmm, getting off-topic, I guess. This update seems substantial enough. It implements the Grand Arena, where players of level 85 and up can face off against each other in one-on-one battles. Throw your collection against another and try to win the most rounds. Are there rewards? Maybe, maybe not. I’m not downloading the game again to check. But probably? So long as you’re willing to accept a sensible feeling of self-satisfaction as a reward, most victories in life are rewarding. Yep, I think I just got away with that!
That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!
