Guns of Boom (Free) was one of the bigger games to get AR support through ARKit in what the team called AR Spectator Mode. This allowed players to watch matches in real time through augmented reality making the experience a lot more immersive. While most people are still talking about VR, I still think AR has a lot more potential. Watch the AR Spectator Mode showcased below:
Guns of Boom implemented this for the esports side and they are leveraging it for the Season One Finals in partnership with ESL and Game Insight. The finals take place at the Intel Esports Arena in LA where 8 teams will compete for the $120,000 prize pool. These teams have qualified from Europe and North America through the season. This event will be the first broadcasted esports event that uses Augmented Reality for viewers. The event will also see details for Season Two of Guns of Boom revealed.
I didn’t think many developers would end up using 3D Touch on iPhones in games but a lot of them actually have good use cases for it. ARKit on the other hand always had a ton of potential but it never really saw a lot of use outside the few augmented reality games that exist. Hopefully the Guns of Boom Season One Finals end up working out well through AR for more developers to try and leverage this for more immersion.
